AIG's Talbot Underwriting Services Ltd (TS1) seeks an Underwriting Technical Support Manager to lead the underwriting support team in London, driving operational excellence across underwriting and IT collaboration.

The role requires strong team leadership, Lloyd's market experience, and solid underwriting knowledge, with a focus on process improvements, regulatory awareness, and effective communication with senior stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Commercial Insurance experience.
  • Direct team management experience.
  • Experience in the insurance industry, specifically underwriting, with knowledge of Lloyd's market and regulatory impact.
  • ACII coursework preferred but not required.
  • Working knowledge of insurance operating systems used to rate, code, track and issue policies.

Responsibilities

  • Manages a team of Technical Assistants and Sr. Technical Assistants, including hiring, performance management, and scheduling.
  • Oversees day-to-day operations of the underwriting support unit.
  • Act as first escalation point for operations staff on service issues.
  • Develops relationships with underwriters and CoE partners to execute end-to-end Operations processes.
  • Tracks quality, timeliness, productivity, and service delivery; translates into metrics for the team.
  • Reviews workflows and reports to drive process efficiency and regulatory compliance.
  • Supports IT development efforts as SME for Talbot IT and external providers.
  • Maintains open communication with underwriters to foster partnership and teamwork.

How you will create an impact

Reporting to the Operations Manager, this position is responsible for the management of underwriting support staff. The staff roles managed may include any combination of Technical Assistant or Sr. Technical Assistant. This includes human resource management including mentoring, counselling, goal setting, and staff development. Promotes teamwork and collaboration in partnership with underwriting and other functional teams within the company.

People Management

  • Manages a team of Technical Assistants
  • Actively manages the team in all aspects, such as hiring, performance management, development, and schedule coordination.
  • Manages the day-to-day operations of the support unit.
  • First point of escalation for operations staff regarding service issues.
  • Identify servicing issues and works with the Operations Manager to document the issue and follow up through resolution.

Operations Support

  • Develops key relationships with underwriters and CoE partners to execute the end-to-end Operations processes.

  • Tracks and translates quality, timeliness, productivity, and service delivery requirements into individual, team, and unit metrics.

  • Review and manage production and quality control reports and take appropriate action for improved results.

  • Ensures compliance with workflows and procedures.

  • Review workflows/processes in order to identify process efficiencies. Document workflow/process changes, train onshore/offshore staff, and implement and monitor change through BAU status.

  • Support any IT development efforts as a subject matter expert. Act as the point of coordination and functional subject matter expert for solutions provided and supported by Talbot IT and external software/solution providers

  • Maintains open and effective communication with underwriters in order to foster partnership and teamwork.

  • Proactively maintains effectiveness when experiencing changes in work responsibilities or environment; adjusts effectively to work within the new structure, process requirements, or culture.

What you’ll need to succeed

  • Commercial Insurance experience.
  • Direct team management experience. Ability to build coherent teams and to lead teams through significant operation and cultural change
  • Experience in the insurance industry, specifically underwriting, with experienced knowledge of the Lloyds market, its regulatory requirements, and the impact this may have on a proposed solution or business change.
  • Coursework completed towards ACII, or other relevant commercial insurance industry designations preferred but not required.
  • Working knowledge of insurance operating systems which are used to rate, code, track and/or issue insurance policies.
  • Proactive, independent work ethic with strong time management, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent marketing, influencing, negotiating and communication skills in dealing with C-suite leaders.
