Job summary

Air Liquide UK Limited is seeking an experienced Fleet Engineer to provide technical leadership across Air Liquide UK's transport operations. You will ensure fleet assets are maintained, compliant with laws, and optimised for performance, across a mixed fleet of tankers and trailers.

The role interfaces with workshops, vendors and transport management to deliver reliability and continuous improvement. Candidates should have 5+ years in HGV fleet engineering, a formal mechanical/automotive

Qualifications

• 5+ years of hands-on experience within HGV, tanker, trailer, or specialist fleet engineering and maintenance.
• Formal engineering qualification (Mechanical, Automotive, or related discipline).
• Firm understanding of UK fleet legislation, vehicle maintenance practices, and routine inspection regimes.
• Proven track record working with internal workshops, external service providers, and engineering suppliers.
• Strong IT proficiency to track fleet reliability, review maintenance costs, analyse technical metrics, and write clear engineering reports.
• Valid Full UK Driving Licence (Category B).
• EngTech registration (or equivalent) and IOSH Managing Safely certification.

How will you CONTRIBUTE and GROW?

Air Liquide is searching for an experienced Fleet Engineer to join the team and provide technical engineering support across Air Liquide UK and Energas transport operations.

You will be responsible for ensuring fleet assets are maintained, operated and developed in accordance with legal requirements, company standards and operational needs.

The role is the primary technical interface between fleet operations, maintenance providers, workshops, suppliers and transport management, supporting fleet reliability, compliance, engineering improvements and asset performance across a mixed fleet of specialist vehicles, trailers and tanker equipment.

The Fleet Engineer shall provide technical leadership and support in relation to all fleet engineering activities and responsibilities including, but not limited to:

• Support the management of fleet maintenance carried out by internal workshops and external service providers.
• Monitor fleet reliability, availability and maintenance performance, identifying trends and implementing improvements.
• Ensure vehicles, trailers and associated equipment remain compliant with legal and company requirements.
• Support with the review of maintenance records, inspections, MOT performance and defect rectification standards.
• Provide technical support for tractor units, rigids, trailers and cryogenic equipment.
• Support supplier performance management, audits and engineering reviews.
• Support vehicle specification, procurement, refurbishment and replacement programmes.
• Develop and maintain engineering procedures, technical standards and maintenance policies.
• Investigate technical failures, incidents and recurring defects, identifying root causes and preventative actions.
• Provide engineering support to operations, maintenance providers and management teams.
• Analyse maintenance costs, downtime and whole-life fleet performance.
• Support fleet capital projects and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Produce technical reports, engineering assessments and business cases.
• Support regulatory investigations where fleet engineering expertise is required.

Are you a MATCH?

The ideal candidate for this role will have demonstrable experience in HGV fleet engineering or Heavy Vehicle maintenance. You will need strong communication skills and an ability to analyse technical and commercial information to make sound recommendations. We are also looking for:

• Must-Haves Industry Experience: 5+ years of hands‑on experience within HGV, tanker, trailer, or specialist fleet engineering and maintenance.
• Engineering Background: Formal engineering qualification (Mechanical, Automotive, or a related discipline) with strong mechanical aptitude to diagnose complex faults and implement practical solutions.
• Compliance & Legal Knowledge: Firm understanding of UK fleet legislation, vehicle maintenance practices, and routine inspection regimes.
• Maintenance & Vendor Oversight: Proven track record working with internal workshops, external service providers, and engineering suppliers.
• Data & Analytical Skills: Strong IT proficiency to track fleet reliability, review maintenance costs, analyse technical metrics, and write clear engineering reports.
• Autonomy & Driver’s Licence: Valid Full UK Driving Licence (Category B) with the self‑motivation to manage multiple engineering priorities independently.
• Nice‑to‑Haves Specialized Fleet & Hazmat: Background in ADR transport operations or specialist fleets (tankers, cryogenic equipment, or industrial gas).
• Professional Certifications: EngTech registration (or equivalent) and IOSH Managing Safely certification.
• Fleet Lifecycle Projects: Prior experience in vehicle procurement, writing specifications, refurbishment, or continuous improvement initiatives.
• Auditing & Licensing: Experience carrying out supplier audits/engineering assessments, and holding a Category C1 driving entitlement.
