Job summary

Kirklees Council is seeking a highly motivated Transport Workshops Manager to lead the vehicle maintenance workshops across multiple sites. You will ensure safety, DVSA compliance and operational effectiveness in line with licensing obligations.

You will manage Workshop Team Leaders and Technicians, oversee maintenance programmes, MOT testing, procurement, budgets and performance, and contribute to continuous improvement within the Transport Services team.

Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of DVSA requirements, MOT testing and health & safety rules.
  • Proven ability to lead, develop and drive high performance teams.
  • Experience in procurement, contract management and budget control.
  • Excellent organisational and report-writing skills.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee multip-site vehicle maintenance, ensuring safe, compliant operations.
  • Lead workshop teams and participate in maintenance programmes and testing.
  • Manage budgets, contracts and performance metrics for Transport Services.
  • Support procurement exercises and keep DVSA compliance tracker up to date.

Job description

We are looking for a highly motivated and experienced Transport Workshops Manager to join our Transport Services team. This is a key leadership role with responsibility for managing the effective operation of the Council's vehicle maintenance workshops, ensuring all assets are maintained to the highest standards of safety, compliance and operational effectiveness. You will lead the delivery of planned and reactive maintenance across multiple sites, ensuring full compliance with DVSA requirements, Operator's Licence undertakings, and all relevant transport and health & safety legislation. Reporting to the Fleet and Transport Manager, you will oversee Workshop Team Leaders, Vehicle and Plant Technicians, and support staff to ensure a professional, efficient and compliant service that supports frontline Council operations. As the Council's subject matter expert for workshop operations, you will also oversee maintenance programmes, MOT and testing activities, management of budgets, contracts and performance. You will play a key role in monitoring compliance systems such as the Operator Compliance Risk Score and vehicle maintenance scheduler, supporting continuous improvement and responding to evolving legislative and technological changes within the transport sector. As part of the Transport Services management team, you will also participate in vehicle and associated services procurement exercises. This role is based across our workshop sites, providing operational leadership and technical expertise to ensure that all fleet maintenance activities are delivered safely, efficiently and in line with statutory requirements.   • Strong knowledge of transport legislation, including DVSA requirements, MOT testing, Operator's Licence undertakings and health & safety regulations.
  • Proven ability to lead, manage and develop teams, ensuring high performance and continuous improvement.
  • Experience in procurement, contract management and budget control within an operational workshop setting.
  • Excellent organisational, communication and report-writing skills.
  • A recognised Level 3 qualification in vehicle maintenance (or equivalent) with significant post-qualification experience.
  • A Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) in Road Haulage Transport Management (National or International), or be working towards obtaining this qualification.
