About The Role
We are seeking a highly experienced and motivated Transport Manager to lead the transport operations at the busy depot in Heysham. This is a hands-on and rewarding role, ideal for a confident leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment and is passionate about operational excellence, safety, and team success.
As Transport Manager, you will be responsible for the overall efficiency and compliance of the depot's transport operations, including route planning, fleet management, and team leadership. You'll play a key role in driving performance, maintaining high standards, and ensuring the depot operates within budget and in line with company values.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage all transport operations for the Heysham depot, ensuring compliance with legal and company standards
- Lead, develop, and motivate a team of Class 1 and Class 2 drivers to perform at their best
- Plan cost-effective routes, ensuring maximum operational efficiency
- Hold full accountability for fleet management, including maintenance schedules and legal compliance
- Analyse and act upon tachograph data, delivering retraining or corrective action when necessary
- Ensure all operations are compliant with WTD (Working Time Directive) and Tachograph legislation
- Monitor and manage KPIs, controlling budgets and operating costs
- Liaise effectively with both internal and external stakeholders, including suppliers and customers
- Deliver training for new starters and existing team members to support continuous improvement
- Plan staffing levels, manage holidays and absences, and oversee agency usage when needed
- Manage Health & Safety audits and Safe Systems of Work (SSOW)
- Produce and manage driver rotas to ensure full coverage and legal compliance
- Use Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word, to manage data and support reporting
Requirements
- Valid Transport Manager CPC qualification
- Proven experience managing transport operations, ideally within a busy depot environment
- Strong leadership and people management skills
- Experience working with Class 1 and Class 2 drivers
- Proficient in using Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) and transport management systems
- Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities
- Knowledge and experience in managing budgets, KPIs, and cost control
- Strong understanding of H&S practices, WTD, and driver legislation
- Organised, proactive, and capable of working independently
