Job summary

KeolisAmey Metrolink (KAM) is seeking a Tram Maintenance Team Leader at our Trafford Depot. This hands-on leadership role guides a skilled maintenance team, driving high-quality work, smart prioritisation and operational excellence to keep the network safe and reliable.

Working with the Tram Maintenance Manager, you’ll operate on a 24/7 rotating shift, covering days, nights, weekends and public holidays, championing continuous improvement and shaping the next evolution of our maintenance

Qualifications

  • Leadership experience in maintenance, project or production teams.
  • NVQ Level 3 in an engineering discipline is essential.
  • Extensive maintenance experience with fault-finding and diagnostics.
  • Strong safety, risk management and continuous improvement knowledge.
  • Good verbal/written communications and IT skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Tram Maintenance Manager with prioritising repairs and modification works.
  • Lead the team to ensure trams are maintained and serviced per approved regimes.
  • Ensure maintenance work orders and records are complete and up to date.
  • Comply with safety policies, regulations and zero-harm principles.
  • Provide first-line technical support during tram failures or recoveries.
  • Engage with internal/external stakeholders to resolve issues.

Job DescriptionJoin our team at KeolisAmey Metrolink (KAM), the largest light rail network in the UK! Due to internal changes, we are now looking to appoint a Tram Maintenance Team Leader at our Trafford Depot. In this hands‑on leadership role, you’ll guide a skilled maintenance team, driving high‑quality work, smart prioritisation and operational excellence. Working closely with the Tram Maintenance Manager, you’ll ensure our fleet remains safe, reliable and future‑ready, while championing continuous improvement and shaping the next evolution of our maintenance operations. As part of a 24/7 operation, you’ll work a rotating shift pattern covering days, nights, weekends and public holidays - keeping the network moving around the clock.

Key accountabilities will include:
  • Assist the Tram Maintenance Manager with maintenance prioritisation, repairs and modification works through effective teamwork, plant and materials.
  • Provide leadership to ensure trams are correctly maintained and serviced in line with the approved maintenance regime.
  • Ensure planned, corrective and reactive maintenance work orders are completed accurately, with all asset management records kept up to date.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant policies, regulations, standards and safety requirements, demonstrating zero-harm principles in all working practices.
  • Motivate, lead and manage the team to achieve departmental and business performance targets, ensuring staff competence and effective task allocation.
  • Act as the first line of technical support for the Network Management Centre during tram failures or recovery situations.
  • Engage with key internal and external stakeholders, including TfGM, OEMs and suppliers, ensuring clear communication and collaborative problem-solving.
  • Authorise and allocate resources required for the maintenance and delivery of tram assets, ensuring tooling, equipment, materials and documentation are correct and fit for purpose.
What you’ll bring:
  • Demonstrates the ability to motivate and support others, with emerging experience in leading or coordinating people within a maintenance, support, project or production environment.
  • NVQ Level 3 in an engineering discipline is essential, with strong knowledge of electrical/electronic, mechanical and hydraulic maintenance systems.
  • Extensive maintenance experience with the ability to fault‑find, carry out diagnostic investigations and perform root cause analysis.
  • Strong understanding of safety, risk management and continuous improvement techniques within a maintenance environment.
  • Ability to work effectively with internal and external stakeholders, supported by strong verbal and written communications and IT skills.
