Introduction to the Department

The Driver Training team plays a key role in preparing officers and staff to drive safely, confidently and professionally in support of policing operations. Working within the wider learning and development function, the team delivers training aligned with the College of Policing and National Policing Curriculum, while ensuring learning remains relevant to operational needs and professional standards.

About the Role

As a Driver Trainer, you will design, deliver and evaluate driver training across West Midlands Police. You will support learners to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence required to meet the relevant driving standards, creating a safe and inclusive environment that enables individuals to reach their potential. The role also involves keeping training current, maintaining your own operational competence and contributing to the continuous improvement of driver training.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and deliver driver training programmes that meet College of Policing Curriculum and organisational requirements.
  • Assess learner performance and competence, providing constructive feedback and development plans where required.
  • Research and maintain current knowledge of legislation, guidance, policing practice and procedures to ensure training remains accurate and effective.
  • Create a safe, inclusive learning environment adapting teaching and communication methods to meet individual learner needs.
  • Maintain professional and operational competence, contributing subject‑matter expertise, trainer resilience and the development and evaluation of wider learning products
Salary and Shifts

Salary: £38,169.00 - £44,700.00

Shift patterns: Monday to Friday, 08:00-16:00

Selection Process

  2. Assessment and Interview - Candidates (from a non policing background) who successfully pass the application stage will be invited to attend an assessment drive. Candidates (from a policing background) who successfully pass the application stage will be invited to attend an interview once the assessment drives have concluded. This will provide you with the opportunity to demonstrate your suitability for the role. Proposed Dates: 28/09/2026
  3. Pre-Employment Checks - If you are selected as the preferred candidate, you will be required to successfully complete relevant pre‑employment checks before receiving a formal offer. For internal candidates, some checks may not be required. Checks may include:
    • Vetting Checks - You must successfully complete the required level of Recruitment Vetting and Counter Terrorism clearance before starting the role. This may include providing information relating to your background and financial history a spart of the vetting process.
    • Medical Checks - Appointment to this role is subject to successfully completing medical checks. This may include a drugs, test and where required a fitness assessment and hearing test.
    • Reference Checks - You will need to provide details covering at least five years of employment, education or other relevant activity history.
