Job summary

South Lanarkshire Council is seeking a Trainee Trading Standards Officer for the Hamilton team. The role requires delivering enforcement and advisory services, including inspections, investigations and licence processing, with opportunities to develop expertise within consumer protection.

The successful candidate will join a busy service, carry out statutory duties, support staff development and engage with external bodies to safeguard businesses and consumers.

Qualifications

• Diploma in Consumer Affairs or equivalent (FCATS/ CSCATS).
• Experience in a Trading Standards environment with inspections and prosecutions.
• Excellent communication skills and motivation to protect consumers and businesses.

Responsibilities

• Carry out statutory enforcement and advisory duties including inspections and investigations.
• Process licence, registration and approval applications.
• Investigate and report on compliance and non-compliance cases.
• Prepare statutory notices and maintain accurate records using the authority systems.
• Deliver lectures and talks to organisations and groups as required.
• Assist with staff development and regulatory training.
• Support Health and Safety compliance and liaise with enforcement bodies.
• Represent the service in internal and external working groups.
