Job summary

Barbour in South Shields is seeking a Trainee Machinist to learn garment construction on our iconic wax jackets. You will train across a range of sewing machines and materials, delivering hands-on craft and contributing to high-quality production in a supportive team environment.

Full training is provided. You will work to production targets, follow safety procedures and develop skills within Barbour's renowned craftsmanship and standards.

Qualifications

• Competent in garment construction.
• Ability to carry out detailed garment construction and finishing tasks accurately.
• Able to work as part of a team.

Responsibilities

• Meet production targets to meet deadlines as identified on the production schedule.
• Safely operate and handle machines per procedures and training provided.
• Report defective equipment to the Team Leader and maintain workspace housekeeping.
• Meet quality standards aiming for right first time, right every time.
• Follow Barbour Safety Policy and Training Handbook requirements.

Position Overview:

We're excited to be looking for Trainee Machinists to join the iconic Barbour Factory in South Shields! This is a fantastic opportunity to learn a highly skilled craft and play a hands‑on role in creating our world‑famous wax jackets. You'll work with a variety of sewing machines and materials, developing your expertise while helping us maintain the exceptional quality and craftsmanship Barbour is known for.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Meet productivity targets in relation to making garments to meet deadlines as identified on the production schedule.
• Responsible for the safe handling of machines you come into contact with, operating machinery in accordance with procedures and training provided.
• Report any defective equipment, you are working with to your Team Leader, and maintain the general housekeeping of your own workplace.
• Meet agreed quality standards aiming for 'right first time, right every time'.
• Follow the requirements of the Company Safety Policy, which is documented in the Induction Training Handbook, and is displayed on all Health and Safety Noticeboards

Skills and Experience:

• Competent in the construction of garments.
• Ability to carry out detailed garment construction and finishing tasks accurately.
• Able to work as part of a team.
• Good eye for detail.
• Able to work quickly and accurately.
• Able to work effectively to production targets and deadlines.
