Job summary

SGN is hiring Trainee Gas Engineers to support our field teams in repairing, laying, and servicing gas mains and services. Training and equipment are provided, so no prior experience is required to start your journey toward a safe and rewarding career in the gas industry.

You will learn on the job, work with skilled engineers, and help keep customers’ gas supply safe and reliable. The role includes site work, outdoor environments, and possible standby or overtime to cover needs as they arise.

Qualifications

• UK driver’s licence is essential.
• Able to work in a team and follow safety procedures.
• No prior experience required – full training provided.

Responsibilities

• Support engineers on site during gas service and mains repair activities.
• Assist with excavation, laying and repairing gas pipes in outdoor environments.
• Maintain SGN vans and tools to ensure safe, efficient operations.
• Be available for standby and overtime as needed.

Salary: £30.3k per annum (increase to £33.7k upon successful completion of probationary period)

We're looking for exceptional Trainee Gas Engineers, and here's the catch - we're not interested in your CV!

You will be given all training and equipment to support our Engineers in repairing, replacing, and laying new gas mains and services. With no prior experience needed, we will provide everything to fully equip you with the tools and knowledge to keep our customers safe and warm.

How you’ll support us on our mission to keep people safe and warm…

• Support engineers on site and learning from them daily during gas service and mains repair activities
• Excavation, digging in the public & private highways, laying and repairing gas pipes so you will work in various outdoor environments safely and as part of a team
• Being part of essential works to keep gas supply running to millions of people all year around and at any time day or night – standby and overtime opportunities apply for irregular hours
• You will maintain the SGN vans and tools before and after each job, ensuring your team has all the equipment to do your job safely and efficiently

• Will be required to be clean shaven: As part of our commitment to the personal safety of our employees you will be required to be clean shaven, and pass a face fit test, to wear tight fitting dust masks and breathing apparatus. This is for personal protection to ensure you don’t breathe in any harmful substances, whilst carrying out critical work within our communities.
• Holds a valid UK driver’s licence: A full, valid UK driver’s licence is essential for this role.
• Due to operational response times, you must be based within a commutable distance from the desired locations.
