Qualifications

• Proven leadership in toolroom or engineering management.
• Experience leading highly skilled technical teams.
• Ability to manage workloads and priorities in manufacturing.
• Solid understanding of tooling manufacture, repair and maintenance.
• Experience with progression press tooling (advantageous).
• Knowledge of toolroom equipment (Wire EDM, grinding, milling, turning).
• Experience coordinating resources to achieve targets.
• Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
• Exposure to 3D CAD/design software such as SolidWorks (advantageous).

Responsibilities

• Lead day-to-day Toolroom operations and develop skilled personnel.
• Manage workloads, resources, deadlines and priorities to meet requirements.
• Oversee development and manufacture of new tooling from concept to commissioning.
• Maintain tooling development, repairs and ongoing maintenance.
• Ensure tooling meets quality, efficiency and delivery standards.
• Implement preventative and predictive maintenance to maximise availability.
• Optimize labour and machine capacity for efficiency and minimal downtime.
• Track performance against KPIs and objectives.
• Identify opportunities to improve tooling processes and capacity.
• Research new tooling technologies, equipment and processes.
• Collaborate with manufacturing, planning and sales to meet tooling needs.
• Investigate variations and quality issues affecting tooling performance.
• Promote continuous improvement, teamwork and accountability.

Job description

Position: Toolroom Manager

Proactive are currently recruiting for a Toolroom Manager to join an established engineering and manufacturing business.

As a Toolroom Manager, you'll lead a skilled team of toolmakers and trainees, managing workloads, resources and production requirements while ensuring tooling is delivered to the required quality, cost and timescales.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the day-to-day activities of the Toolroom, including the development and support of skilled engineering personnel
• Manage workloads, resources, deadlines and priorities to ensure customer and production requirements are achieved
• Oversee the development and manufacture of new tooling from initial concept through to commissioning
• Manage tooling development, modifications, repairs and ongoing maintenance
• Ensure tooling and associated work meet required standards for quality, efficiency and on-time delivery
• Establish effective preventative and predictive maintenance programmes to maximise tooling availability and minimise downtime
• Manage labour and machine capacity to maximise efficiency and minimise lost production time
• Monitor departmental performance against agreed targets, KPIs and operational objectives
• Identify opportunities to improve tooling processes, equipment, capacity and capability
• Research and support the introduction of new toolmaking technologies, equipment and processes
• Work closely with manufacturing, production planning, sales and other departments to ensure tooling requirements are understood and delivered
• Monitor tooling performance and investigate variations, quality issues and production problems
• Drive a culture of continuous improvement, teamwork, collaboration and accountability within the Toolroom

Personal skills

• Proven experience within a Toolroom, Toolmaking or engineering management environment
• Strong people management and leadership experience, particularly within a highly skilled technical team
• Experience managing workloads, resources and competing priorities within a manufacturing environment
• Strong understanding of tooling manufacture, development, repair and maintenance
• Experience with progression press tooling would be advantageous
• Good knowledge of Toolroom equipment such as Wire EDM, grinding, milling and turning
• Experience managing projects and coordinating resources to achieve defined outcomes
• Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to analyse complex technical information and provide clear direction
• Experience working with highly skilled technical personnel and managing diverse teams
• Knowledge or experience of 3D CAD/design software such as SolidWorks or similar would be advantageous
