Job Profile:

This role presents a unique opportunity for both experienced theatre practitioners and newly qualified nurses looking to build a career in specialist surgical care. As part of our investment in clinical excellence, we offer a comprehensive Preceptorship Programme for newly qualified nurses and the opportunity to train as a Surgical First Assistant (SFA) – an advanced qualification allowing scrub practitioners to assist directly in surgery.

Our 10 fully equipped operating theatres are designed to support complex procedures in Neuro-Spinal, Robotics (Gynae/Urology/ Spinal/ENT/Orthopaedics), Orthopaedics, General Surgery, Thoracic, and Ophthalmic, General-Vascular-Interventional, Plastics, Maxillo-Facial and ENT specialties. Working alongside leading consultants and highly skilled multidisciplinary teams, you will have access to cutting-edge surgical technology, including robotic-assisted systems.

Theatre Scrub Practitioner – Band 5

Department: Main Theatres

Salary: Band 5 Pay Scale

Contract: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week

Shift Pattern: Early & Late shifts on rota covering Monday – Sunday, released 2 months in advance. Plus On-Call participation once a month.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and organise surgical instruments, equipment and directly involve in ordering specialist equipment.
  • Active involvement with departmental clinical audits
  • Participates with the department’s quality improvement projects/initiatives
  • Assist the surgical team intraoperatively, providing direct support to consultants and ensuring optimal patient care.
  • Maintain exemplary infection control and patient safety standards, adhering to strict clinical governance frameworks.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues across the multidisciplinary team to facilitate smooth and coordinated patient care.
  • Ensure comprehensive and accurate clinical documentation, upholding professional and regulatory standards.
  • Support and mentor junior staff and students, contributing to the development of future theatre practitioners.

Skills & Experience:

We are looking for a dedicated, highly motivated individual who thrives in a fast-paced surgical environment and is committed to delivering exceptional patient care.

  • Registered Nurse (Adult) or Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) with current NMC or HCPC registration.
  • Previous theatre scrub experience within an acute hospital setting.
  • A strong understanding of perioperative nursing and infection control standards.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary surgical team.
  • Excellent communication, organisation, and problem-solving skills.
  • A proactive and adaptable approach, with a commitment to maintaining high standards of clinical practice.
  • A passion for professional development, with an interest in training opportunities such as the Surgical First Assistant (SFA) qualification.
  • Previous experience working within private healthcare or specialist surgical services.
  • Evidence of postgraduate training in perioperative practice or a specialist surgical area.
  • Experience in mentoring, teaching, or supporting junior staff.
  • Newly qualified nurses are welcome to apply, as we offer a structured Preceptorship Programme to support your transition into theatre practice.
