Job description

Social network you want to login/join with:

You'll help keep our nation moving every single day. This is a critical part of the work we do: the daily upkeep of the rail network.

As a technician, you'll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.

Our technician community comes from diverse backgrounds, and this might be your first consideration of a career in rail. We focus on your transferable skills and behaviors; if you can demonstrate these, we will provide all necessary training to ensure you work safely and competently on the network.

This is an electrical-based role requiring applicants to already be qualified in electrical installation at a minimum of NVQ level 2, with NVQ level 3 preferred.

Competence may be awarded at Level 2 if the individual has achieved:

  • C&G 2382 and C&G 2365, or
  • An advanced apprenticeship in railway engineering with an electrical E&P bias, or
  • Courses deemed equivalent, such as those provided by armed services, or
  • Previous electrical industry experience verified as acceptable by the Route Head of Asset [E&P] or delegated authority.

Additional acceptable qualifications include, but are not limited to:

  • City & Guilds – 236 Part 2, 2360, 2330, 2365, 2357, 8202 or 5357, and 2381.
  • BTEC - Level 3 Diploma in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Electrical Installation.
  • EAL - Level 3 Diploma in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Electrical Installation.
About the role (External)

Our technicians serve as the vital link between team leaders and operatives, specializing in areas such as:

Track Maintenance: Responsible for maintaining, inspecting, and repairing the track network (Permanent Way or P-Way) to ensure safety and efficiency. This is a manual role involving work with rails, sleepers, ballast, drainage, and ancillary structures.

Work conditions include outdoor environments in all weather, day or night, often involving manual labor and transporting equipment across challenging terrain. Safety, adherence to rules, and teamwork are critical, especially working near moving high-speed trains.

You matter to your team

You will be a natural team player capable of leading when required, delivering work safely, and ensuring team competencies meet safety standards. Acting as a role model for safe behaviors and challenging risks ensures everyone returns home safely each day.

Career progression is possible, with today's technicians becoming tomorrow's team leaders. Transferable skills required include:

  • Leadership: Ability to lead, motivate, and direct teams for safe, efficient work.
  • Effective communication: Ability to convey instructions clearly.
  • Technical skills: Knowledge and experience in inspection, faulting, maintenance, and renewal techniques relevant to the discipline.
  • Safety: Demonstrating safe behaviors, implementing safe systems, and challenging unsafe situations.
  • Problem-solving: Persistent in finding safe, effective solutions and staying updated with standards and procedures.
  • Willingness to learn: Continual development of skills and knowledge.
  • Relevant qualification: Ideally NVQ Level 1 or 2, or equivalent experience.

This is an electrical role requiring existing electrical installation qualifications at NVQ level 2 (preferably level 3). Acceptance at Level 2 may be based on:

  • C&G 2382 and C&G 2365, or
  • An advanced apprenticeship in railway engineering with electrical E&P bias, or
  • Equivalent courses or experience verified by the Route Head of Asset [E&P].

Additional qualifications considered acceptable include:

  • City & Guilds – 236 Part 2, 2360, 2330, 2365, 2357, 8202, 5357, 2381.
  • BTEC - Level 3 Diploma in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Electrical Installation.
  • EAL - Level 3 Diploma in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Electrical Installation.
It matters that this is the right role for you

Additional information:

  • Shifts include days, nights, and weekends.
  • Outdoor work in all weather conditions.
  • Employment is contingent on drug and alcohol testing, medical, and BPSS checks, including hearing and eyesight exams.
  • A valid driving license (category B) is required to operate Network Rail vehicles.
  • Applicants should live within a 60-minute commute of the location.
You matter to us

We value your commitment to learning. We provide comprehensive training to develop your technical and non-technical skills, supporting a rewarding career in rail. Opportunities for progression include leadership roles. Benefits include travel discounts, healthcare, flexible working, volunteering leave, and more.
