Job summary

Sapien, an engineering business near West Bromwich specialising in material handling and bespoke lifting equipment, is seeking an experienced Technical Sales Manager to drive technical sales and develop new opportunities. You will advise customers on engineering solutions, cost and present detailed quotations, while managing relationships across the UK.

Applicants should have a mechanical engineering qualification or equivalent experience, with a proven track record in technical/engineering

Qualifications

• Qualified in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent with industry experience.
• Experience in technical/engineering sales or client-facing role.
• Ability to cost quotations and negotiate contracts.

Responsibilities

• Act as a technical product specialist, advising customers on material handling and lifting solutions.
• Generate new sales opportunities through proactive business development and customer engagement.
• Develop and maintain strong relationships with existing customers and identify opportunities for additional business.
• Conduct regular customer meetings, site visits and technical surveys throughout the UK.
• Understand customer requirements and translate them into appropriate engineering and commercial solutions.
• Prepare, cost and issue detailed technical quotations and proposals.
• Review enquiries and tenders for technical, commercial and contractual suitability.
• Negotiate pricing, commercial terms and contracts with customers.
• Maintain appropriate gross margin levels across quotations and orders.
• Liaise with engineering and manufacturing teams to ensure proposed solutions are technically and commercially viable.
• Participate in design reviews and provide customer insight throughout the development process.
• Produce sales forecasts and maintain accurate pipeline information.
• Create basic concept drawings and proposal sketches where required.
• Work alongside the legal team to negotiate and agree appropriate contractual Terms & Conditions.
• Maintain regular communication with customers throughout the quotation and manufacturing process, ensuring they are kept informed of project progress.

Essential Experience & Skills

• HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering, or significant relevant industry experience.
• Proven experience in a technical sales, engineering sales or customer-facing engineering role.
• Strong understanding of engineered products and the ability to interpret customer requirements.
• Experience preparing and costing quotations.
• Commercial awareness with experience negotiating pricing and contracts.
• Ability to develop and manage customer relationships.
• Self-motivated and capable of working independently.
• Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple opportunities simultaneously.
• Experience with CAD and proposal drawings would be advantageous.
• Full UK driving licence.
