This role will oversee the Mechanical and Bodyshop Department, leading a team of technicians and mechanics to deliver high-quality repairs, while optimizing workflows and ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.

You will manage resources, schedules and budgets, drive continuous improvement, and collaborate with other departments to implement innovative workshop solutions.

Qualifications

• Proven technical experience within the automotive industry, especially in mechanical repairs and workshop management.
• Strong knowledge of mechanical processes, methods, and latest industry techniques.
• Experience in leading and managing a workshop team.

RMS are working with an outstanding automotive client, we are looking for an experienced and qualified Technical Operations Manager to join the team. Our client is well-known for providing vehicle storage, inspection, maintenance, dispatch and transportation facilities.

Job Overview

As Technical Operations Manager, you will oversee all operations within the Mechanical and Bodyshop Department, ensuring the smooth running and the efficient delivery of technical services. You will lead a team of mechanics and technicians, ensuring high standards of quality, efficiency, and safety in all repair and maintenance activities. This role requires technical expertise, leadership, and strong organisational skills to optimise workflows, improve productivity, and maintain compliance with industry regulations. You will also be responsible for resource management, staff development, and implementing best practices to enhance overall performance.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

• Provide technical expertise and guidance to mechanics and bodyshop staff
• Stay up to date with industry trends, new technologies, and best practices in automotive repair and maintenance
• Collaborate with other departments to integrate innovative solutions and technologies into workshop processes

Workshop Operations

• Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Mechanics & Bodyshop Department, ensuring smooth workflow and efficiency
• Develop and implement structured work schedules to optimise productivity and meet deadlines
• Ensure that all repairs and servicing are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards

Team Management

• Lead, manage, and develop a skilled team of mechanics and technicians
• Foster a positive and collaborative working environment, ensuring high levels of motivation and performance
• Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide training and development opportunities

Quality Control & Safety Compliance

• Establish and enforce quality control measures to maintain high service standards
• Ensure compliance with health & safety regulations, conducting regular safety training and risk assessments
• Investigate and address safety concerns and incidents promptly

Resource & Inventory Management

• Oversee the procurement, maintenance, and allocation of department equipment, tools, and materials
• Coordinate with suppliers to ensure the availability of necessary resources
• Monitor budget usage and cost efficiency within the department

Reporting & Documentation

• Maintain accurate records of workshop activities, including repair schedules, budgets, and technical specifications
• Prepare regular performance reports for senior management, highlighting key metrics and improvement areas
• Ensure adherence to company and ISO 9001/9002 standards
• Undertake additional duties as required, aligned with the role's responsibilities

Qualifications/Experience

Experience

• Proven technical experience within the automotive industry, particularly in mechanical repairs and workshop management
• Strong knowledge of mechanical processes, methods, and latest industry techniques
• Experience in leading and managing a workshop team
• Fully conversant with Health & Safety regulations relevant to mechanical workshop operations

Education/Certifications

• City & Guilds / NVQ or equivalent qualification in Automotive Mechanics, Light Vehicle Maintenance, or Repairs

Skills

• Strong organisational and workflow planning skills, with experience in resource allocation and capacity planning
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and relevant business management tools
• Understanding of quality control measures and adherence to industry standards
• Knowledge of ISO 9001/9002 is advantageous
