Job summary

Benjamin-Grace Limited is recruiting an Assistant Workshop Manager to join the engineering team. This varied role combines workshop leadership, engineering, data, reporting and systems, working with the Workshop Manager to support smooth running and development of the wider workshop team.

You will lead, coach and develop the team, manage KPI and cost reports, ensure compliance with LOLER and PUWER, and collaborate with other departments.

Qualifications

• HND minimum in mechanical, electromechanical engineering or management.
• Degree in engineering, data/business preferred.
• Experience with heavy vehicles or heavy plant equipment essential.

Responsibilities

Job description

We are currently recruiting for an Assistant Workshop Manager to join the engineering team at a well-established organisation.

This is a varied role combining workshop leadership, engineering, data, reporting and systems, working closely with the Workshop Manager to support the smooth running and ongoing development of the wider workshop team.

The Role

As Assistant Workshop Manager, you will support the Workshop Manager with the day-to-day operation of the workshop and deputise in their absence. You will help lead, coach and develop the engineering team while also taking ownership of workshop data, reporting and systems.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Supporting the Workshop Manager with the day-to-day running of the workshop.
• Leading, coaching and developing the workshop team.
• Supporting performance management and employee development.
• Producing accurate KPI, downtime and cost reports.
• Maintaining workshop records, service histories and inspection records.
• Managing and improving digital workshop processes and systems.
• Supporting budget monitoring and cost control.
• Ensuring equipment maintenance meets statutory requirements, including LOLER and PUWER.
• Carrying out quality checks, audits and inspections.
• Supporting workload planning and maintenance scheduling.
• Monitoring training, competence and apprentice development.
• Liaising with other departments and key stakeholders.
• Providing hands-on technical support when required.

About You

We are looking for an experienced engineering professional with a strong background in heavy vehicles or heavy plant equipment, combined with leadership, reporting and systems experience.

You will ideally have:

• HND minimum in Mechanical Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering or Management.
• A degree in Engineering, Data/Business or a related discipline would be preferred.
• Demonstrable experience working with heavy vehicles and/or heavy plant equipment is essential.
• Previous experience supervising, leading or developing an engineering/workshop team.
• Good knowledge of workshop and maintenance operations.
• Strong analytical, organisational and reporting skills.
• Good IT skills, particularly Microsoft Excel.
• Experience using maintenance/workshop management systems would be advantageous.
• An understanding of LOLER and PUWER and equipment compliance.
• The ability to analyse data and use it to improve workshop performance.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
• A practical, hands-on approach combined with good leadership skills.
