Job description

Sense Education is seeking an experienced and empathetic Teaching Assistant to join our team at a specialist SEND setting in Leeds. In this role, you’ll make a significant difference in the lives of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), helping them develop their skills and confidence. We’re looking for someone with strong behaviour management skills, experience with SEND, and familiarity with alternative communication methods to help us build a positive, supportive learning environment.

The Role:

-Provide tailored, one-on-one and small-group support to students with SEND, ensuring each student feels valued and motivated.
-Assist the classroom teacher in lesson preparation and help facilitate an inclusive learning experience.
-Adapt and implement alternative communication methods to suit individual student needs.
-Promote a positive classroom culture through effective behaviour management and encouragement.
Work closely with teachers, therapists, and support staff to create an engaging and safe environment for all students.

Person Specification:

-Qualifications: A Teaching Assistant (TA) qualification or other relevant certification is ideal; degree-level education is a plus.
-Experience: experience working with individuals with SEND.
-Skills: Knowledge of alternative communication methods (e.g., Makaton) and strong skills in behaviour management.
-Attributes: Compassionate, patient, and enthusiastic about supporting individual learning journeys. Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.

School and Logistics:

-Location: Specialist SEND provision in Leeds.
-Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM (part-time applications welcome).

Safeguarding children is an integral part of what we do and we have a stringent safer recruitment process. We undertake checks on all the candidates we work with. As such we require a current Enhanced DBS Disclosure for everyone working in Schools. If you do not have a subscription to the DBS Update Service, you may be required to complete a new DBS application as part of the registration process. If you take a temporary role with Sense Education you will be paid on a weekly basis.
