Job summary

Powys County Council is recruiting Teaching Assistants Level 2 (Special) at Ysgol Penmaes. The ASD-specific posts are 32.5 hours per week, term-time only.

Salary is £27,274 to £28,153 per annum pro rata (or £14.13–£14.59 per hour). The ideal candidate will be a team player with a positive approach to severe challenging behaviour and experience with learners with complex ALN, and will undertake training to extend knowledge.

Qualifications

• Experience working with learners with complex Additional Learning Needs (ALN) preferred.
• Ability to work as part of a team and follow instructions.
• Willingness to undertake training to develop ALN knowledge.

Responsibilities

• Support individuals or groups during independent or group work, explaining tasks and reinforcing key objectives.
• Implement consistent routine and structure to aid pupil engagement.
• Engage pupils in activities and use a total communication approach.
• Adopt TEACCH strategies to support independent learning.
• Assist with personal, social and emotional development and self-esteem.
• Monitor safety and welfare of pupils and assist with care needs.
• Support pupils on short trips off the premises.

Teaching Assistants Level 2 Special - a number of posts are available (ASD specific)

32.5 hrs per week term time only

Salary: Grade 5 Point 7 to Point 9 £27,274 to £28,153 per annum pro rata

£14.13 to £14.59 per hour

The ideal candidates will be highly effective enabling adults and team players, have a positive approach to severe challenging behaviour support and experience of working with young people with complex Additional Learning Needs, and will be willing to undertake training to further their knowledge.

Support to the pupils:

• Support individuals or groups during independent /group work, e.g. explain tasks, reinforce key objectives/concepts or vocabulary, use practical apparatus, support less able pupils, extend/challenge the more able, keep pupils on task, interested, motivated and engaged.
• Implement consistent routine and structure
• Engage pupils in Attention Autism sessions
• Use a consistent total communication approach
• Adopt the TEACCH approach to support independent learning skills
• Help pupils to develop communication skills and role play activity.
• Assist in the personal, social and emotional development of pupils and development of self -esteem.
• Encourage and reinforce positive interactions between pupils working within any behaviour targets set.
• Identify and report uncharacteristic behaviour patterns.
• Monitor and provide for general care, safety and welfare of pupils, including tasks connected with social education and physical care needs – e.g. toileting, feeding requiring the application of complex procedures, where necessary.
• Adopt a trauma informed schools and PACE approach
• Support pupils to achieve accreditations at an appropriate level if appropriate
• Understand the curriculum pathway the pupils follow
• Assist with pupil supervision, accompanying small groups of pupils on short trips off the premises.
• Use physical intervention/safe handling strategies following training (e.g. Team Teach).
• Complete incident/accident form in consultation with class teacher/ALNCo/
