Job summary

Qualified Teacher of Children and Young People with Vision Impairment is sought on a permanent basis in Birmingham. The role will involve assessment, teaching and support for CYP with vision impairment from birth to 25, working across families, nurseries, mainstream and specialist settings, and travelling across the city.

The post requires QTS and a commitment to inclusion, with the ability to work flexibly in a multi-disciplinary team within Birmingham's SEND reforms.

Qualifications

• Must hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
• Experience teaching children and young people with vision impairment.
• Willing to undertake mandatory training for CYP with vision impairment.
• Able to travel across Birmingham to work in various settings.

SEND in Birmingham is on an ambitious and improving journey. As recognised by inspectors during the June 2025 Ofsted/CQC inspection, “in recent years, the experiences of children and young people with SEND in Birmingham have started to improve.”

We are now building on that progress through the Birmingham SEND Reforms —working as one Local Area Partnership across Education, Health and Social Care, alongside parent carers, children and young people.

We are looking for a Qualified Teacher of Children and Young People with Vision Impairment to provide assessment, teaching and support for children and young people with vision impairment from birth – 25 years. We are seeking an enthusiastic, committed and highly motivated teacher to join this vibrant team, and be flexible in their ways of working in order to meet the wide range of needs and age range of children and young people with vision impairment that the team supports.

The team provides support to families and educational settings to raise achievement, promote inclusion and improve access to learning opportunities for children and young people with vision impairmentacross all age ranges, within the city of Birmingham.

This position will involve working in family homes, nurseries, mainstream schools, special schools and FE colleges and travelling across the city of Birmingham.

Candidatesfor this post must hold qualified teacher status.

We will consider applications from Qualified Teachers of Children and Young people with Vision Impairment who hold the mandatory qualification, as well as from those who are currently undertaking the mandatory qualification, or those qualified teachers who have experience teaching CYP with vision impairment who would be willing to undertake the mandatory training.
