Job summary

Birmingham City Council is hiring a Teacher of the Deaf to support hearing-impaired pupils across birth to 25 years. The role involves working in homes, nurseries and schools, providing specialist teaching and assessment in collaboration with families and professionals.

Suitable candidates will hold Qualified Teacher Status and may be on a pathway to the mandatory qualification. The post is permanent, 32.5 hours per week, with progression within the SEN pay scale.

SEND in Birmingham is on an ambitious and improving journey. As recognised by inspectors during the June 2025 Ofsted/CQC inspection, “in recent years, the experiences of children and young people with SEND in Birmingham have started to improve.”

Do you have recent and successful experience of teaching children and young people who are deaf or hearing impaired?

Are you passionate about promoting inclusion and improving outcomes for children and young people with sensory needs?

We are seeking an enthusiastic, committed, and highly motivated Teacher of the Deaf to join our Hearing Support Team. You will provide specialist assessment, teaching, and support for children and young people (CYP) with hearing impairment from birth to 25 years, working in partnership with families, schools, and other professionals to raise achievement and promote inclusion.

This position will involve working in family homes, nurseries, mainstream schools, special schools and FE colleges and travelling across the city of Birmingham. Candidates for this post must hold qualified teacher status. We will consider applications from Qualified Teachers of the Deaf who hold the mandatory qualification, as well as from those who are currently undertaking the mandatory qualification, or those qualified teachers who have experience teaching deaf CYP who would be willing to undertake the mandatory training. We would welcome applications from those with a key interest in audiology.
