Job summary

Teaching Personnel seeks an experienced SEMH Teacher to join a specialist setting in Portsmouth from September 2026. You will deliver engaging, differentiated lessons and provide emotional and academic support to pupils with SEMH needs.

You will work with support staff and pastoral teams to create a nurturing classroom environment that promotes progress and wellbeing. A qualified teacher with SEMH experience is required.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

Are you an experienced teacher with a passion for supporting pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs?

We are currently seeking a dedicated and resilient SEMH Teacher to join a specialist educational setting in Portsmouth from September 2026. This is an excellent opportunity for an inspirational teacher who is committed to creating positive outcomes for young people who may have experienced barriers to learning within mainstream education.

As an SEMH Teacher, you will be responsible for delivering engaging, differentiated lessons while creating a structured, nurturing and supportive classroom environment.

You will work closely with support staff, pastoral teams and other professionals to ensure that each pupil receives the appropriate academic and emotional support to progress.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and delivering engaging lessons tailored to individual needs and abilities.

  • Supporting pupils with a range of SEMH needs, including behavioural and emotional difficulties.

  • Creating a positive, consistent and inclusive classroom environment.

  • Developing strong, trusting relationships with pupils.

  • Using effective behaviour management strategies and promoting positive behaviour.

  • Differentiating learning to ensure all pupils can access the curriculum.

  • Monitoring pupil progress and contributing to individual education and support plans.

  • Working collaboratively with teaching assistants, pastoral staff, families and external professionals.

  • Supporting pupils to develop confidence, resilience, independence and life skills.

  • Maintaining high expectations while recognising and responding to individual barriers to learning.

The successful candidate will be a qualified and passionate teacher who understands that building positive relationships is central to achieving successful outcomes for pupils with SEMH needs.

  • Calm, patient, consistent and emotionally resilient.

  • Confident managing challenging behaviour using positive and restorative approaches.

  • Able to adapt teaching to meet a wide range of learning needs.

  • A strong communicator with excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Committed to safeguarding and promoting pupil wellbeing.

  • Able to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

  • Passionate about helping young people reach their full potential.
