Job summary

Baily Garner LLP is seeking a Senior Sustainability Consultant to lead Building Physics modelling and environmental assessments. You will guide projects from early ideation through detailed design, integrating passive design strategies, energy analyses and compliance with Part L.

The role offers hybrid working and a lead role within cross-disciplinary teams, with mentoring responsibilities for junior staff and opportunities to develop sustainability offerings for clients.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in a Sustainability Consultant role or similar.
• Experience using building performance modelling software such as IES VE or equivalent.
• Strong understanding of Building Regulations, building physics and environmental assessment methodologies.
• Ability to interpret modelling outputs and develop practical, evidence-based recommendations.
• Experience using SAP software.

Responsibilities

• Lead and deliver Building Physics and environmental modelling across projects.
• Undertake dynamic thermal modelling and advise design teams on building performance.
• Carry out Part O overheating and CIBSE Guide A thermal comfort assessments.
• Undertake SAP and SBEM assessments to demonstrate compliance with Part L.
• Deliver operational energy assessments and support low‑carbon design.
• Evaluate passive design strategies, building fabric, glazing, shading, ventilation and services.
• Perform daylight, solar and environmental performance analyses as required.
• Translate modelling outputs into practical design recommendations for clients and teams.
• Provide technical input from concept through construction and delivery.
• Review models, calculations and reports for quality and accuracy.
• Support and mentor junior consultants in Building Physics and modelling.
• Collaborate with sustainability, architectural and engineering teams to deliver integrated strategies.
• Develop client relationships and identify opportunities to extend Building Physics services.

Job description

As a Senior Sustainability Consultant, you will lead and deliver Building Physics and environmental modelling across a varied portfolio of projects, from early-stage optioneering through detailed design and post-design analysis. This role offers the potential of hybrid working and Project Team Leader responsibilities. Projects you will be working on vary from small-scale housing to large and complex commercial buildings, new-build and existing.

Responsibilities

• Leading IES Virtual Environment (IES VE) modelling and simulation across projects.
• Undertaking dynamic thermal modelling and advising design teams on building performance.
• Carrying out Part O overheating and CIBSE Guide A thermal comfort assessments, including relevant industry methodologies and guidance.
• Undertaking SAP and SBEM assessments to demonstrate compliance against Part L of the Building Regulations.
• Delivering operational energy assessments and supporting energy-efficient, low-carbon building design.
• Using modelling to evaluate passive design strategies, building fabric, glazing, shading, ventilation and building services options.
• Undertaking daylight, solar and environmental performance analysis where required.
• Translating complex modelling outputs into clear, practical design recommendations for clients and multidisciplinary project teams.
• Providing technical input from early concept design through planning, detailed design and construction.
• Reviewing models, calculations and reports produced by other team members and maintaining high standards of technical quality.
• Supporting and mentoring junior consultants, helping develop their Building Physics and modelling capabilities.
• Working closely with our wider sustainability, architectural and engineering teams to deliver integrated sustainability strategies.
• Building strong relationships with clients and identifying opportunities to develop our Building Physics and sustainability offer.
• Keeping abreast of evolving regulation, industry guidance and best practice in building performance and environmental design.
• Leading interdisciplinary project teams.

Qualifications

• Degree in a relevant field
• Membership of a professional body e.g. CIBSE
• Proven experience in a Sustainability Consultant role or similar
• Experience using building performance modelling software, such as IES VE or equivalent
• Comprehensive understanding on Building Regulations, building physics and environmental assessment methodologies
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret modelling outputs and develop practical, evidence-based recommendations
• Experience using Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) software
• Experience preparing, reviewing and quality assuring technical reports and project deliverables
• Understanding of BREEAM is an advantage but not essential
