Job summary

Discovery in Chard is seeking a dedicated Support Worker to assist a woman in her 60s living at home. You will provide personal care, mobility support and accompany her on outings, with a focus on safety, comfort and independent living.

Flexible long shifts are required, including sleep-ins; full training and development opportunities are offered, with a supportive team and competitive benefits.

About the role

In this rewarding role, you will be supporting a woman in her 60s to live a happy, fulfilling and independent life in her own home. She has autism, a learning disability and experiences some anxiety, so you’ll provide consistent, reassuring support that helps her feel safe, understood and confident in her day-to-day life.

You’ll support her with all aspects of personal care and mobility, offering gentle guidance as she uses her walker. Your role will also involve helping her enjoy the activities she loves – from arts and crafts (especially hat-making!) going to discos' and listening to her favourite music like ABBA and Elvis. You’ll accompany her on trips out, whether that’s visiting the garden centre, popping to a farm shop, or enjoying a trip to the cinema or bowling. She also has a love for swimming and goes every week - So you'll need to feel confident with splashing in the pool.

This is a sociable role where building a genuine connection is key, as well as supporting her to enjoy time at home with games like cards and board games.

Shifts - Long days (7am - 10pm, and include sleep-ins, then 7am - 2/3pm), so flexibility and commitment are essential.

About you

To thrive as a Support Worker in this home, you will be someone who is compassionate, reliable, and genuinely motivated to make a positive difference in people’s lives. You don’t need previous experience in social care, but you do need the right values, the willingness to learn, and the confidence to support individuals to live the life they choose.

You’ll bring strong communication skills and the ability to build trusting relationships with the people you support, their families, and your colleagues. A good Support Worker here is patient, calm under pressure, and able to adapt to different situations with empathy and professionalism. You’ll also be proactive, observant, and comfortable encouraging people to develop their independence and try new things.

Basic IT skills are important, as you’ll use digital systems for recording notes, completing training, and staying connected as part of the team. You’ll show a commitment to your own learning and development, embracing the training we provide to ensure you feel confident and equipped in your role.
