Continuity of Care Services is looking for a calm and gentle Support Worker to provide consistent, person-centred support to a young woman with Autism, Learning Disabilities, Epilepsy, complex communication needs, sensory sensitivities and significant anxiety.
This is a role where personality and approach are particularly important. We are looking for someone who can take the time to build a trusting relationship, understand an individuals unique way of communicating and provide support in a calm, reassuring and encouraging manner.
The successful support worker will support the client to enjoy everyday activities, access the wider community, pursue her interests and gradually develop her confidence and independence. She is a warm, engaging and very articulate young woman who enjoys companionship and interaction. She has complex communication needs. She therefore needs somebody who will listen carefully, allow her time to process information and get to know her sufficiently well to recognise the meaning behind her communication rather than relying solely upon the words she uses. She is also very sensitive to laughter and may perceive laughter as being directed towards her even when this is not the intention. This can cause genuine distress. The successful person will need to understand this sensitivity and respond with kindness and reassurance rather than dismissing her concerns. Music is extremely important to her. She loves listening to music, enjoys cinema, animation, Disney and DreamWorks films, sensory activities and experiences.
The role will primarily involve providing support within community settings. As you will be required to transport the client in your own vehicle, it is essential that you are a confident, calm, and responsible driver.
Experience is important, but for this particular role, the right personality and approach are equally important. We are looking for someone who is emotionally aware and able to build a safe, trusting and positive relationship.
Above all, you will be calm, gentle, patient and relaxed, with a consistent and reassuring approach. Consistency is particularly important, as building trust takes time.
