Job summary

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is recruiting a Support Service Assistant to join the Hotel Services team in Cardonald Medical Centre. You will assist with cleaning, catering, laundry, and porter duties, contributing to a clean, safe and welcoming hospital environment.

Role involves varied shifts across mornings, afternoons, and weekends with full training provided. A valid driving licence is required for driving duties, and there are extensive employee benefits and development

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of integrated support services including cleaning, catering, laundry, and porter duties (full induction provided).
  • Training in the safe use of cleaning, catering, laundry, and mailroom equipment.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety requirements.
  • Knowledge of COSHH regulations.
  • Knowledge of Manual Handling and Lifting Techniques.
  • Basic Food Hygiene certification (training provided).
  • Knowledge of Infection Prevention and Control practices.
  • Understanding of quality systems and safe working procedures.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and communicate with staff, patients, and visitors.
  • Full driving licence required for posts involving driving duties.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver a range of support services contributing to the smooth running of healthcare facilities.
  • Carry out cleaning activities in line with NHS Scotland Cleaning Specifications and infection prevention standards.
  • Operate cleaning equipment and manage waste disposal.
  • Provide catering duties such as meal preparation/service and temperature monitoring.
  • Assist with laundry and patient clothing services, porter and messenger duties, patient transport and escorting, mail distribution, and site security checks.
  • Follow work schedules, complete required documentation, report faults, wear PPE, and comply with health and safety procedures.

Job description

The Role

As a Support Service Assistant, you will play a key role in providing high-quality domestic and catering services, helping to maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for patients, staff, and visitors. Working as part of the Hotel Services team, you will carry out a range of non-clinical support duties across cleaning, catering, patient clothing services, and porter/messenger functions. Full training will be provided, and there will be opportunities to work across a variety of departments and clinical areas.

This role does not meet the eligibility criteria for a or a NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is unable to provide candidates or employees with a Certificate of Sponsorship (COS).

Key Responsibilities

The Support Service Assistant is responsible for delivering a range of support services that contribute to the smooth running of healthcare facilities. Duties include carrying out cleaning activities in line with NHS Scotland National Cleaning Specifications and infection prevention standards, operating cleaning equipment, handling waste disposal, and maintaining a safe and hygienic environment. The role may also involve catering duties such as meal preparation and service, temperature monitoring, dishwashing, and use of catering equipment. Additional responsibilities can include laundry and patient clothing services, porter and messenger duties, patient transport and escorting, mail distribution, movement of equipment and furniture, site security checks, and stock monitoring. The post holder will follow work schedules, complete required documentation, use equipment safely, report faults to supervisors, wear appropriate PPE, and comply with all relevant health and safety procedures and departmental policies.
