Job summary

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is recruiting for a part-time catering assistant based at Vale of Leven Hospital. You will support delivering meals to patients, staff and visitors, plating meals and maintaining hygiene in a busy hospital kitchen.

Applicants should be flexible to weekend shifts, be curious about food safety, and able to work as part of a friendly team under nurse supervision. Full NHS benefits apply.

The role:

Your duties will include: working within the kitchen and ward area’s to provide an efficient, high quality catering service to patients, staff, and visitors. This includes taking patients food order’s, working alongside, NHS staff, serving food at ward level, keeping all areas of the kitchen clean, replenishing supplies. There will be the use of economic and safe use of cleaning agents, following manufacturers recommended instructions. In this role you will be required to use electrical equipment. i.e Burlodge Regen Oven’ and, Dishwasher, Tablet, You are required to wear protective clothing as supplied by the Department and complete all daily/weekly sign off sheets for areas of work including HACCP paperwork There is the requirement for you have a flexible approach to daily routine.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
  • Permanent Contract
  • Part time Position 5.76 hours per week
  • Location based in Vale of Leven Hospital
  • Shift Pattern - Saturday- 16.15pm-19.15pm Sunday 16.15pm-19.01pm
  • Supporting the delivery of catering services to patients, staff, visitors and for functions within the hospital.
  • Regeneration of patients meals wither centrally or at ward level.
  • Plating patient meals at the point of service as advised by nursing staff.
  • Cleaning and wash-up of all equipment, machinery, and crockery associated with catering services.
  • Assist food production staff with the basic preparation of meals.
  • Undertake picking & packing of patient meal components.
  • Support the overall delivery of patient meals to ward level.
  • Comply with Food Hygiene Regulations with regard to food service.
  • Comply with HACCP system in relation to equipment cleaning and departmental cleanliness.
  • Maintain high personal hygiene standards.
  • Comply with Health and Safety regulations and adhere to manual handling/risk assessment/fire safety training.
  • Report faulty equipment.
  • Operate cash register at point of service and cash handling.
  • Setting up, clearing and cleaning of the staff dining room for service.
  • Record keeping associated with catering services, e.g. HACCP and temperature control, receipt and storage of supplies.
  • Store goods correctly and use stock on a rotational basis.
  • Cleaning and replenishment of vending machines.
  • Comply with all statutory and Sector procedures.
  • Provide guidance to new members of staff relating to work practices.

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part-time working hours will be reduced on a pro-rata basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
