Job summary

Carmichael UK is seeking an experienced Sub Agent for a major HS2 civils project based near Aylesbury. You will oversee viaducts, earthworks and structural packages, leading Section Engineers and Foremen while ensuring delivery to programme, budget and quality targets.

Reporting to the Site Agent, you will manage subcontractors, coordinate labour and temporary works, and maintain progress reports. A strong safety culture and NEC contract familiarity are essential for success.

Qualifications

• Proven experience as a Sub Agent, Senior Engineer or Section Engineer on major civil engineering projects.
• Experience delivering viaducts, bridges, reinforced concrete structures and earthworks.
• Experience on HS2 or large infrastructure projects (highways, rail, civils).
• Good knowledge of construction methodologies, temporary works and sequencing.
• Experience managing subcontractors and site delivery teams.
• Understanding of NEC contracts and commercial awareness.
• Strong planning, organisational and leadership skills.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and review method statements, risk assessments and ITPs.

• Ensure compliance with HS2 standards and all SHEQ requirements.
• Monitor progress and produce short‑term programmes and progress reports.
• Carry out regular site inspections and audits.
• Support commercial teams with cost control, forecasting and change management.
• Review engineering documentation, drawings and technical specifications.
• Attend client and stakeholder meetings, providing updates on progress and key risks.
• Drive a positive safety culture across all site activities.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Sub Agent to join a major HS2 project based in Aylesbury. The successful candidate will play a key role in the delivery of complex civil engineering works, including viaduct construction, earthworks, reinforced concrete structures, drainage and associated infrastructure.

Reporting to the Site Agent, you will be responsible for managing sections of work safely, efficiently and in accordance with programme, quality and budget requirements whilst supporting the wider project team in delivering one of the UK's largest infrastructure projects.

Required Experience

• Proven experience as a Sub Agent, Senior Engineer or Section Engineer on major civil engineering projects.
• Strong background delivering viaducts, bridges, reinforced concrete structures and earthworks.
• Experience working on major infrastructure projects such as HS2, highways, rail, water or large‑scale civils schemes.
• Good knowledge of construction methodologies, temporary works and sequencing.
• Experience managing subcontractors and site delivery teams.
• Understanding of NEC contracts and commercial awareness.
• Strong planning, organisational and leadership skills.

Qualifications

• Degree/HNC/HND in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
• SMSTS.
• CSCS Management Card.
• First Aid at Work (desirable).
• Temporary Works Coordinator/Supervisor (desirable).
• Full UK Driving Licence
