Job summary

Queen Mary University of London is seeking a Student Wellbeing Adviser to act as a first point of contact for students experiencing mental health difficulties, providing guidance, wellbeing support and triage referrals. About the Role

The Student Wellbeing Adviser acts as a first point of contact for students experiencing mental health difficulties, providing guidance, wellbeing support and ensuring students are connected to the most appropriate internal or external services. The role involves triaging mental health and counselling referrals, delivering one-to-one wellbeing sessions, supporting students to develop coping strategies, responding to concerns and assisting with crisis intervention. The post also contributes to wellbeing campaigns, staff training, service development projects, partnership working across the university and maintaining accurate records and reporting processes. Overall, it is a varied role combining direct student support, mental health triage, project work, stakeholder collaboration and administration.

About You

The successful candidate will be educated to degree level or have equivalent experience, with a background in areas such as psychology, wellbeing or mental health support, and will ideally have completed, or be willing to complete, Mental Health First Aid training. They will have experience working in a wellbeing, mental health or student support setting, providing guidance to individuals experiencing mental health difficulties, working within multidisciplinary teams and managing competing priorities in a busy environment. The role requires excellent communication, organisational, problem-solving and teamwork skills, alongside confidence using IT systems and digital platforms. Candidates should also possess knowledge of student mental health and wellbeing issues, higher education support services, NHS mental health referral pathways and key legislation relevant to student support, including the Equality Act, Mental Health Act and GDPR.

About the Department

The Advice and Counselling Service is a multidisciplinary student support service offering counselling, mental health support, psychiatry clinics, welfare advice, financial advice and immigration advice and a sexual assault and harassment adviser (SAHA). Alongside the Disability and Dyslexia Service and the Student Life team, it makes up one third of the student wellbeing division within the Student Experience directorate. This role sits within the mental health team.
