We are searching for a calm, caring and empathetic individual to join a welcoming infant school in Leeds as a Student Teaching Assistant. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain hands-on experience supporting pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), while contributing to their learning and development in a truly rewarding environment.
The roleThis role involves providing tailored support to pupils in Early Years and Key Stage 1, with a strong focus on those with SEND. Working in both 1:1 and small group settings, you’ll be helping children access the curriculum in a way that suits their individual needs. Responsibilities include supporting sensory circuits, helping with emotional regulation, implementing behaviour management strategies, reading with children, and contributing to their academic, social and emotional development. You will also follow individual EHCPs and support children in breakaway spaces when needed.
The ideal person We are looking for someone who is patient, calm and nurturing, with a genuine interest in supporting young learners. You’ll ideally have completed a relevant degree such as education, psychology, childhood studies or a related field or hold a Teaching Assistant or Childcare qualification. Previous experience in a school or with SEND is beneficial but not essential—what matters most is your willingness to learn and make a difference.
The school This is a vibrant and inclusive mainstream infant school in Leeds with a high intake of pupils with SEND. Early years learning is centred around play, and you’ll help pupils with additional needs engage with learning in a way that suits them best. The staff are dedicated, supportive and passionate about providing personalised education for every child.
Hours Monday to Friday, 8:30am–3:30pm Full time and part time applications welcomed.
Safeguarding children is an integral part of what we do and we have a stringent safer recruitment process. We undertake checks on all the candidates we work with. As such we require a current Enhanced DBS Disclosure for everyone working in Schools. If you do not have a subscription to the DBS Update Service, you may be required to complete a new DBS application as part of the registration process. If you take a temporary role with Sense Education you will be paid on a weekly basis. All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position but long term. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available.
