Job summary

Charles Francis Cooper is seeking a Structural Engineering Technical Director to lead the growth of our specialist structural engineering team, combining technical leadership with people development, client relationships and supporting the continued growth of the structural engineering offering.

The successful candidate will lead technically complex structural projects across buildings, civil structures and industrial assets, and will recruit, mentor and train staff while developing proposals

• Substantial experience in engineering consultancy with structural design, assessment and refurbishment.
• Proven leadership of technical teams and development of engineering capability.
• Strong client relationship and business development experience.

• Take technical leadership of complex structural engineering commissions.
• Build and develop specialist structural engineering capability, including recruiting, mentoring, training and developing team members.
• Take responsibility for effective project delivery, including technical quality, budgets and allocation of resources.
• Identify, manage and mitigate design-related risks throughout project delivery.
• Coordinate effectively with clients, project stakeholders and internal multidisciplinary teams.
• Work directly with clients to establish project requirements, agree scopes and develop appropriate proposals.
• Contribute technical input to tenders, bids and project proposals.
• Work alongside senior management and commercial teams to identify, develop and secure opportunities with both existing and prospective clients.

Structural Engineering Technical Director.

Location: Various Locations in the UK. but Preferred - Scotland central belt (Hybrid)

Overview

The successful candidate will take a leading role in the development and growth of our client’s specialist structural engineering team, combining technical leadership with responsibility for people development, client relationships and supporting the continued growth of the structural engineering offering.

They will lead technically complex structural projects across buildings, civil structures and industrial assets, with particular expertise in structural design, assessment and refurbishment. Alongside project delivery, the role will include recruiting, mentoring, developing and training technical staff, defining scopes of work, developing proposals and tender submissions, and working with senior leadership, Business Development and Marketing teams to develop opportunities with both new and existing clients.

This is a senior consultancy position requiring someone who can combine technical excellence in structural engineering with team leadership, project management and client-facing commercial development.

Candidate Requirements

• Substantial experience within engineering consultancy, particularly involving structural design, assessment and refurbishment.
• Strong technical capability across buildings, civil structures and industrial assets.
• Detailed understanding of applicable engineering standards and guidance governing structural design, assessment and refurbishment.
• Strong knowledge of structural loading and appropriate analytical methods.
• Proven capability in the design and assessment of reinforced concrete, steel and other structural materials.
• Competence with specialist structural analysis and design software.
• Experience leading technical teams and developing engineering capability.
• Proven people-management, coaching and mentoring experience.
• Strong technical reporting skills, including presenting engineering findings and recommendations.
• Ability to manage several concurrent projects while working to demanding timescales.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Full UK driving licence, with the ability to travel to client sites when required.

Qualifications

• BEng, MEng or MSc in Civil / Structural Engineering, or an equivalent qualification.
• Chartered status through IStructE or ICE.

Ideally You Will Have

• Experience of temporary works design.

Working Arrangements

• Hybrid working arrangement.
• UK travel will be required, with occasional overseas travel and overnight stays depending on project needs.
