Job description

Structural Engineer / Senior Structural Engineer / Associate: Focus on what matters at this highly collaborative and supportive Medium-sized Multidisciplinary Consultancy. The role is based in Manchester.
Overview

Our client is a reputable and growing multidisciplinary consultancy providing civil and structural engineering, surveying, and project management throughout the UK.

They are seeking a skilled and knowledgeable Structural Engineer to join their buildings team. The appointment is flexible and could suit candidates from Senior Engineer through to Associate level. The role focuses on the assessment of existing buildings and structures, diagnosis of structural defects and failures, appraisal of structural risk, and development of practical remedial solutions.

You will be comfortable undertaking inspections, interpreting structural behaviour, producing clear technical reports and advising clients on appropriate courses of action. The more senior roles will also include responsibility for project delivery, client relationship management, technical review and mentoring of junior engineers.

This is a great opportunity to join a highly collaborative and supportive firm with a genuinely flat structure, no internal competition, and no individual KPIs or billing targets — the focus is on delivering good technical work as a team, not chasing numbers. There are no fixed team sizes or direct reports, with engineers working across varied, technically challenging work alongside a changing mix of colleagues and sometimes partner consultancies.

Responsibilities
  • Undertake inspections, investigations and structural assessments of existing buildings and structures across a range of construction types.
  • Diagnose structural defects, deterioration mechanisms and building failures, establishing root causes and assessing associated risks.
  • Assess the condition and performance of masonry, timber, steel and reinforced concrete structures, and develop proportionate recommendations for further investigation, repair or strengthening works.
  • Prepare technical reports, specifications and remedial strategies for clients and other stakeholders, ensuring clear communication of structural form, behaviour, condition and recommendations.
  • Review drawings, historical information, survey data and investigation findings to inform engineering assessments and conclusions.
  • Liaise with clients, surveyors, architects, contractors and other professionals to develop practical and cost-effective solutions.
  • Provide technical support during the design and implementation of remedial schemes, including site visits and review of construction works where required.
  • Manage the technical and commercial delivery of projects, commensurate with experience and level of appointment.
  • Develop and maintain client relationships, identify opportunities for repeat work and contribute to business development activities where appropriate.
  • Undertake technical review of reports, calculations and recommendations, and mentor junior members of the team.
Requirements
  • Degree qualified in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Chartered Engineer (MIStructE or MICE) or approaching chartership (more junior appointments).
  • Strong track record in the assessment of existing buildings and structures.
  • Sound understanding of structural behaviour, building pathology and defect diagnosis across a range of construction forms.
  • Ability to evaluate structural risk and exercise balanced engineering judgement.
  • Track record in specifying repair, strengthening and remedial works.
  • Excellent technical report-writing skills, with the ability to explain complex structural issues clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Good knowledge of relevant UK legislation, standards and industry guidance.
  • Strong client-facing and stakeholder management skills.
  • Commercial awareness, including understanding of project delivery, fee management and client requirements.
  • Ability to manage multiple commissions and deliver work to programme and budget.
  • A collaborative, team-oriented, low-ego approach — our client places as much weight on attitude and cultural fit as on technical capability.
Desirable
  • Forensic engineering, structural investigations and expert advisory work.
  • Acting for insurers, loss adjusters, solicitors, lenders, asset managers or property owners.
  • Insurance-related structural assessments, subsidence investigations or failure analysis.
  • Historic buildings, traditional construction methods and conservation projects.
  • Management and delivery of remedial and strengthening schemes.
  • Familiarity with structural analysis and design software.
On offer
  • Competitive salary
  • Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) Distribution: a share of company profits, paid twice yearly
  • Pension
  • Car allowance
  • Life Assurance
  • Private Medical Insurance
  • Holidays: increasing with length of service
  • Professional institution subscriptions
  • Flexible working arrangements, agreed individually
