Job summary

Sandwell Council’s Place Division is seeking an experienced Street Lighting Ganger to join the Highways team on a full-time, permanent basis, based from its Oldbury Depot. You will lead a team of operatives and coordinate installation, inspection, maintenance and repair of street lighting columns and electrical equipment across the borough.

The role requires a Level 3 Electrotechnical qualification, strong leadership, and a commitment to safety, with responsibilities including site supervision,

Qualifications

• Hold a Level 3 Electrotechnical qualification or equivalent relevant electrical installation qualification.
• Demonstrate knowledge of electrical installation principles and street lighting systems.
• Experience leading or mentoring teams in street lighting, highways, or electrical environments.
• Strong focus on health and safety and safe working practices in public highways.

Responsibilities

• Lead and supervise a team of Street Lighting Operatives, ensuring work is completed safely and efficiently.
• Carry out installation, maintenance, repair and replacement of street lighting columns and related equipment.
• Coordinate daily workloads, resources, vehicles, plant and materials to meet service targets.
• Provide technical advice and support on all street lighting tasks.
• Undertake electrical inspection, testing and fault-finding with specialist equipment.
• Inspect and maintain illuminated and non-illuminated street furniture and assets.
• Operate specialist vehicles and plant, including hydraulic platforms and crane vehicles.
• Implement temporary traffic management and road safety arrangements.
• Respond to emergency callouts and make safe damaged highway assets.
• Maintain records and work management information systems.
