Job summary

Hitachi Rail UK Limited is seeking an experienced Strategic Planner to lead maintenance planning, forecasting and data governance. You’ll shape long-term maintenance strategies, optimize resources and influence cross-functional decisions across Operations, Projects, Procurement and Data & Systems teams.

The role requires strong engineering/maintenance planning background, advanced Excel, and the ability to develop scenario models and robust plans for current operations and future tenders.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrable experience in engineering or maintenance planning within a complex operational environment.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including complex modelling and dynamic array functionality.
  • Strong analytical and critical-thinking capabilities, with the ability to interpret complex datasets and turn them into clear, actionable plans and reports.
  • Hands-on engineering experience, with the ability to support the development and implementation of fleet improvement strategies.
  • Proven ability to influence and engage stakeholders across different disciplines and organisational levels.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to work independently, manage competing priorities and take ownership of activities.
  • A collaborative approach and strong stakeholder engagement skills.
  • HNC/HND or relevant equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement heavy maintenance strategies across current and future fleets.
  • Identify opportunities to optimise labour, materials, maintenance intervals and locations.
  • Develop scenario-based planning models to support competitive and deliverable bid submissions.
  • Identify and quantify risks relating to material availability, resource constraints and depot capacity.
  • Support maintenance optimisation through scope alignment, interval extension and network/location efficiencies.
  • Work collaboratively across Projects, Operations and Procurement to ensure plans are robust, aligned and deliverable.
  • Validate heavy maintenance schedules against technical and contractual requirements and ensure planning outputs support operations and opportunities.
  • Maintain Bills of Materials to support maintenance planning and operational delivery.
