Hernshead Recruitment Ltd is seeking an experienced Head of Commissioning to own the commissioning process for extra-high-voltage substations and associated underground cable circuits from 11kV to 400kV in the UK. The role requires leadership of a team of commissioning engineers and acts as the technical authority across multiple projects in data centre, renewable, and industrial energy markets.

Qualifications

• Experience leading commissioning engineers for UK DNO/TSO/ICP.
• 5+ years as Senior Authorised Person or Commissioning Engineer, 11kV–132kV in the UK; 400kV desirable.
• Deep knowledge of HV plant, switchgear, substation design, cables, civil engineering, protection and control.
• Ability to interpret and apply engineering standards across a broad project portfolio.
• Strong understanding of UK Distribution Safety Rules and G81/NERS requirements.
• Experience supporting tendering, estimation and work-winning activities.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with data interpretation.
• Minimum HNC in Electrical or Civil Engineering or equivalent.
• Strong written and verbal communication; able to collaborate cross-functionally.
• Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to sites.

Responsabilités

• Lead commissioning across multiple projects from design development through construction and handover.
• Lead, mentor and develop Commissioning Engineers; set objectives and pathways.
• Oversee subcontractor and supply-chain performance for quality and safety.
• Ensure compliance with SHEQ procedures, Distribution Safety Rules and CDM.
• Provide technical authority up to 400kV and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders.
• Define commissioning strategy for 11kV-400kV aligned with standards and procedures.
• Coordinate FAT/SAT activities and integrate commissioning inputs into deliverables.
• Support bids and tenders with robust commissioning methodologies.
• Ensure appropriate resource planning and team structures to meet business needs.
