Job summary

STERIS Instrument Processing is hiring an entry-level Sterile Services Technician in Reading, UK. You will complete 12 weeks of training, then work in an alternating early/late shift pattern with overtime on some weekends.

You will manage sterilization and decontamination of surgical instruments, ensuring safety and regulatory compliance, while developing your skills through structured training and potential industry qualifications.

Qualifications

  • Educated to a good general standard.
  • Basic end-user IT skills to operate track and traceability IT systems.

Responsibilities

  • Follow a regulated end-to-end sterilization/decontamination process for surgical instruments to ensure safe reuse.
  • Prepare sterile consumables by decontamination, inspection, assembly and packing to predefined quality standards.
  • Rigorously check, wash, lay up and pack theatre instrument sets to contract specs.
  • Operate and monitor washing and sterilising equipment effectively.
  • Record and log instrument repairs or missing items on the Tracking and Traceability system (SynergyTrak).
  • Return repaired instruments or equipment to stock or coded sets.

We are currently recruiting for a Sterile Services Technician vacancy. This is an excellent opportunity to join the business at an entry-level and receive world-class training to get you on to a defined career pathway.

Training and Working Pattern
  • 12 weeks training, the first few weeks you will work on Monday-Friday at 9-5pm, thereafter, training will continue during your regular shift hours which will be;
  • Monday to Friday alternating shifts of 06:00 - 14:00, 14:00 - 22:00.
  • One weekend in every three is worked on an overtime basis, 08:00 - 16:00 on both Saturday and Sunday, paid at the applicable overtime rate.
What You Will Do
  • Following a highly regulated end to end sterilization/decontamination process on surgical instruments that have been used in operations in local NHS and private hospitals, to ensure they can be used again safely for the next patient.
  • Ensuring the effective preparation of sterile consumables (dressings, linen, surgical instruments, and equipment) by the process of decontamination, inspection assembly and packing within predefined quality standards.
  • Rigorously checking, washing, laying up and packing sets of theatre instruments to meet contract specifications within predefined quality standards.
  • Safely operating and monitoring machines and equipment (washer/disinfectors, ultrasonic and sterilisers) effectively.
  • Ensuring that repairs and missing instruments or equipment are recorded and logged on the Tracking and Traceability computer system (SynergyTrak).
  • Ensuring that repaired instruments or equipment are returned to stock or the appropriate coded sets or the Trust's appointed person.
Required Experience
  • Educated to a good general standard with demonstrable verbal and numerical abilities.
  • Basic end-user IT skills to operate track and traceability IT systems.

Access to a Level 2 Healthcare Science Assistant Apprenticeship! This is a 12-15 month fully funded programme studying good scientific practice for the Healthcare profession! It is universally applicable outside of STERIS! Completed on the job, you are given 20% of your working hours to study towards the qualification. Further apprenticeships are available throughout the course of your career!
