Job summary

GitHub is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for the Traffic Team. This remote UK role focuses on building and sustaining scalable, resilient traffic systems that power GitHub’s global edge and services.

You will collaborate across distributed teams, drive architecture, and mentor engineers while contributing to high-impact load-balancing work. Ideal candidates bring 9+ years in software engineering, strong Go and Ruby on Rails skills, and experience with large-scale, cloud-native platforms.

Qualifications

• 9+ years in Software Engineering with proven production coding experience in multiple languages (Go, Ruby, Python, etc).
• Associate’s Degree with 8+ years experience in Software Engineering.
• Bachelor’s Degree with 7+ years experience in Software Engineering.
• Master’s Degree with 5+ years experience in Software Engineering.
• Doctorate with 3+ years experience in Software Engineering.
• Or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

• Lead technical decision making and architecture.
• Design scalable, reliable, and performant solutions for complex problems like rate-limiting and routing.
• Maintain and improve the GitHub Load Balancer and related traffic-management systems.
• Write, review, and maintain code primarily in Go and Ruby on Rails.
• Mentor engineers in technical and architectural decisions.
• Participate in on-call rotation and team meetings.
