Job summary

Grafana Labs is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for Grafana Databases and Tempo in a remote‑first environment. You will lead multi‑quarter initiatives, own core Tempo components, design APIs, and drive performance and scalability across distributed systems.

We value OSS experience, Go expertise, and strong software craftsmanship, with a focus on operator‑oriented reliability, SLOs, and cross‑functional collaboration in a fully remote, global team.

Qualifications

Proven track record leading multi-quarter initiatives spanning design, delivery, and operations.
Experience building and operating distributed data systems in production.
Strong software craftsmanship with clean, robust, and maintainable code.
Ability to own production services, pager duties, and toil reduction.

Responsibilities

Lead multi‑quarter technical initiatives from problem framing through rollout.
Own the architecture of Tempo ingestion, storage, query, and metrics.
Design APIs for humans and agents to enable downstream products.
Drive operational excellence with concrete SLOs and automation.
Collaborate with Product and Grafana teams to understand Tempo usage and unblock teams.
Mentor engineers through code reviews and pairing.
