Job description

The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

The New York Times is seeking a staff editor to join our Home team in the London newsroom.

A key goal for The Times is to increase reader engagement by improving the experience of connecting with Times journalism, particularly on our home screens. The Home team is at the heart of these engagement efforts in the newsroom, and we are seeking editors who are passionate about achieving that goal.

In this role, you will be part of the team responsible for programming and presentation of our own digital platforms, including the home screen and push notifications, in accordance with our strategic goals.

In your role as staff editor, you will stay abreast of breaking news, recalibrate our presentation and mobilize editors and reporters. You will also review the quality and tone of what we publish to ensure that Times standards are met and that our content is properly produced.

This is a permanent hybrid position based in London, and includes regular attendance in the office each week as per your departmental guidance. The schedule will include at least one weekend day.

Main Responsibilities

  • Master the production tools and workflows for our home screen(s) and push notifications
  • Write lively and compelling summaries, headlines and captions in a manner that is consistent with Times style
  • Handle fast-moving breaking news presentations
  • Build and/or execute special presentations for the home screen
  • Workshop and send push notifications
  • Work with product and CMS teams to provide insights and feedback about our home screens, along with helping guide development of tools and platforms used to produce our report
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world

Ideal Candidate

  • Experience as a digital news editor, working with audience data to inform programming decisions, including evaluating story performance, weighing reader interest and assessing the strategies and performance of our competitors
  • Excellence in news judgment, audience-sensitive framing and writing mechanics
  • Ability to quickly and cleanly execute changes to the layout and order of our platforms while showing creativity and initiative in presentation and framing
  • Ability to work well under pressure, setting priorities among many tasks and keeping up with the demands of multiple editors and supervisors.
  • Sensitivity to visual design and user experience

Please submit your application by the end of the day, 1st June 2025.
