Metro.co.uk delivers news, features, sport, opinion, and shareable content to a fast-growing global audience and we are looking for a Night News Editor to join the London team. This senior role will see you managing a team of reporters to set the news agenda, react to breaking news, homepage management and ensuring a seamless transition between day and evening shifts.

The role encompasses news editing to support the News Editor and stepping up into that role when required. The job involves the management of editorial production processes, assisting with news page editing, news gathering, copy editing and headline writing.

Job Responsibilities

Assign stories and manage team of reporters on late shifts including breaking news, originals and exclusives
Find innovative ways to go beyond straight news reports when commissioning and editing stories
Commission agency reporters and freelancers where necessary for stories
Operate content management system for publication of stories
Homepage management and writing engaging headlines
Monitor analytics and adjust strategy as needed to optimize KPIs
Work with social media and SEO teams to ensure stories are promoted and optimised
Oversee Metro’s website during evening shifts and edit the home page and news pages
Assist the news editor with management of the team
Liaising with the newspaper team over late breaking news stories

We are looking for professionals with the following:

Prior experience in managing reporters
Ability to work under tight deadline pressure
Applicable knowledge of multiplatform news gathering tools and resources, including analytics
Must have a passion for research and finding the most interesting information
Strong communication skills to work collaboratively with team members
Establish a strong production process, manage breaking news and identify content that engages our readership
Good knowledge of media law and the Editors’ Code of Practice
Direct, develop and maintain the quality and output of rolling, 24-hour, digital news
