Job description

Following a review of our skill mix and internal promotions, we now have an exciting Band 6 vacancy. This role offer a fantastic opportunity to gain experience in acute stroke, acute neurology, and general wards.

To be considered for this role, you must have completed your dysphagia competencies and be able to demonstrate at least nine months of independent management of a dysphagia caseload, including acute stroke. Additionally, you should have completed your NQP framework and be able to evidence your ability to manage patients with more complex dysphagia and communication impairments with minimal supervision. Ideally, you will have also completed placement educator training, enabling you to support students on clinical placements.

You will benefit from daily interaction with a welcoming team of SLT colleagues and close collaboration with the wider multidisciplinary team. We offer a supportive working environment, actively encouraging CPD through regular team meetings, discussion groups, and service development initiatives. There are also opportunities to gain competencies in videofluoroscopy, tracheostomy, and leadership. Please note, this role does not include budgetary responsibilities.

Key responsibilities
  • Provide evidence‑based speech and language therapy assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for the acute SLT caseload.
  • Develop specialist knowledge and skills through role competency frameworks under supervision.
  • Support and mentor junior staff through line management responsibilities.
  • Be supported in all aspects of this varied job role and we actively encourage CPD, hold regular team meetings and discussion groups and look at ways to further develop our services.
  • There is also the opportunity to gain competencies in videofluoroscopy , tracheostomy and leadership.
  • Work independently as a key member of the Speech and Language Therapy team in a developing specialist role, to deliver evidence‑based clinical services.
  • Placement educator for Speech and Language Therapy students.
  • Assess, differentially diagnoses, formulate treatment plans (in collaboration with patients and carers), write assessment reports, identify and choose appropriate therapeutic or clinical management techniques from a range of options.
  • Develop specialist evidence‑based treatment programmes for self and others (e.g. students) which may involve using specific therapy software.
  • Liaise with a wide range of professional colleagues and other agencies to ensure comprehensive management of the patient. This includes attending regular handover meetings and case conferences.
