Job summary

University Hospitals of Northamptonshire (UHN) brings together Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust. The Estates Engineering team at Northampton General Hospital is seeking a Grade Band 5 maintenance engineer for varied mechanical and electrical work with on-call duties, 37.5 hours per week, and potential overtime.

Interviews will be held in early October 2026.

Qualifications

• Have completed and passed a recognised engineering Apprenticeship.
• Achieve NVQ Level 3 within either a mechanical or electrical field.
• Completed latest BS 7671 Update.
• Hold a HNC in a relevant engineering qualification plus relevant experience to graduate.
• Have completed a relevant Authorised Persons course and be validated as competent to work on the Trust site.
• Knowledge and understanding of HTM standards.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose and repair faults on a wide range of equipment and systems across mechanical and electrical services.
• Promote a culture of responsiveness, ownership and customer care within the team.
• Maintain emergency/contingency systems to support critical hospital services.
• Test new or existing equipment to verify safety and operation.
• Instruct others on features and aspects of their work.
• Organise materials requisitions and assist in purchasing where required.
• Keep the helpdesk updated on progress and delays to works.
• Supervise and mentor apprentices, maintenance staff and contractors.

Job overview

As a Trust we are investing in the Estates Engineering infrastructure primarily in our mechanical & electrical engineering systems to provide the foundation for the Trust to achieve significant carbon reductions through the introduction of new renewable technologies.

The post holder will be employed to undertake wide and varied technical maintenance work which will be routine and varied in nature, which will include reactive work and planned preventative maintenance.

To ensure the optimum level of performance, safety and availability of the Trust’s Estate and associated infrastructure and building services.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will problem solve complex technical issues whilst undertaking breakdown repairs, planned maintenance and upgrade work and a diverse range of complex building services to a technical level across both mechanical and electrical services.

Instruct others on the above features and other aspects of their work.

Perform a wide range of work to include other maintenance disciples.

Be available to work additional hours as required.

Provide out of hours call out cover on a rota basis and where necessary

provide cover when there are gaps in the on-call rota.

The post-holder will use permit to works, risks assessments, orders, job documentation etc and complete them accurately and timely.

The post-holder will take reasonable care for their acts or omissions and work in a safe manner at all times

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Act as ‘Competent Person’ as necessary and maintain strict records of Engineering systems to meet operational and statutory requirements.

Organise materials requisitions and assist in purchasing where required.

Keep the customer and helpdesk appraised of work at all times, including feedback on progress and delays to works affecting the customer.

Investigate and promote new working practices within the team to provide more efficient and customer responsive service .

The post-holder will be able to interrogate and utilise the information from the building management system, fire system and other engineering computer systems.

Manufacture, assemble, erect and install new work.

Comply with all current Health & Safety legislation and attend training as instructed.

Be available to work additional hours as required.

Planning and Organising:

The postholder will be allocated work but will have the freedom to organise their work on a day-to-day basis, which includes liaising with the customer to provide minimum disruption.

Policy / Service Development:

The postholder will work collaboratively within the maintenance team to propose changes policy procedures and guidance which are applicable the Estates department.

Education & Training

• Have completed and passed a recognised engineering Apprenticeship.
• Achieve NVQ Level 3 within either a mechanical or electrical field.
• Completed latest BS 7671 Update
• Hold a HNC in a relevant engineering qualification plus relevant experience to graduate, professional level or equivalent training and experience.
• Have completed a relevant Authorised Persons specific course and be validated by an Authorising Engineer as competent to work on the Trust site.
• Knowledge and understanding of HTM standards

Skills

• Demonstrable good keyboard skills
• Deep understanding of how physical and moving parts work, enabling you to dismantle, repair, and reassemble complex machinery
• Competency in reading wiring diagrams, fault-finding on electrical circuits, motor control, and safe low- or high-voltage handling.
• The ability to conduct routine inspections and detect early wear-and-tear to prevent unexpected equipment failures.
• To be able to work in varied working environments across an acute hospital setting

Knowledge and Experience

• In-depth experience of work in same or similar environment
• Able to carry out technical work and complex maintenance whilst undertaking analysis and diagnosis of faults in complex, multi-faceted equipment without supervision
• Have an understanding of current Health & Safety legislation
• Experience of problem solving in a complex and aging estate
