Job summary

Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust in Slough is seeking an experienced Mechanical Technician to join the Estates and Facilities team. The role involves maintaining a wide range of mechanical plant, building services and essential hospital infrastructure to support outstanding patient care.

You will work in a skilled team, undertake maintenance tasks, respond to on-call needs, and contribute to lifecycle projects while adhering to HTMs and safety regulations.

Qualifications

• Level 3 City & Guilds Craft or NVQ equivalents in Electrical Installation/Maintenance
• IT literate
• Evidence of good written and communication skills for effective working relationships throughout the organisation

Responsibilities

• Servicing thermostatic mixing valves (TMVs) and carrying out temperature monitoring
• Undertaking plumbing tasks, including sink and tap installations
• Performing planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and statutory planned maintenance (SPM)
• Diagnosing faults and carrying out repairs on a range of engineering plant and equipment
• Supporting the operation and maintenance of critical hospital systems, including water treatment and steam systems
• Troubleshooting and resolving faults on Building Management Systems (BMS)
• Calibrating and maintaining mechanical and electrical installations
• Liaising with departments across the Trust to coordinate maintenance activities and minimise disruption
• Producing technical reports and condition assessments
• Assisting with engineering improvement projects and lifecycle planning
• Maintaining accurate maintenance records and compliance documentation
• Participating in the on-call rota and providing out-of-hours support when required
• Supporting the development of apprentices and colleagues through knowledge sharing and mentoring

Main duties of the job

As part of our Estates team, you will play a key role in ensuring that critical engineering systems remain safe, reliable and fully compliant.

You will play a vital role in ensuring our engineering systems, plant and equipment remain safe, reliable and compliant, enabling the delivery of exceptional patient care across the Trust.

Experience or knowledge of the following would be advantageous:

• HTM 03 – Heating and Ventilation
• HTM 04 – Water Systems
• Building Management Systems (BMS)
• Mechanical plant and building services maintenance
• Statutory compliance requirements and safe systems of work

Skills and Knowledge

• Level 3 City & Guilds Craft or NVQ equivalents in Electrical Installation/Maintenance or equivalent experience.
• IT Literate
• Evidence of good written and communication skills for effective working relationships throughout the organisation.
• Ability to cope with demanding scenarios.
• Good organisational and communication skills and ability to address and develop solutions to problems.
• Ability and willingness to undertake emergency-situation repairs.
• NHS experience

• Gas Safe registered/ trained
• ONC

• Decontamination control, trained (autoclaves)
• Medical gas trained

Special Requirements

• Be available for out of hours/on-call duties
• Be able to travel between Trust sites when required
• Be able to work overtime at short notice.

Experience

• Prior experience in an engineering service
• Experience in training colleagues in an Estates department
• Experience working in the building trades
• Experience working in large industrial/commercial environments
• Experience in the maintenance of engineering service and fault finding within a similar organisation or similar size and complexity organisation.
• Service within the field of maintenance, focus on service supply, problem solving keeping the client informed.
• Problem solving BMS systems
