As a Biomedical Scientist, the post holder will be responsible for the delegated tasks required for delivering a clinical technical service that aims to achieve efficient and effective patient care. They will work as part of a team on a rotational basis across all diagnostic sections of the laboratory, performing work to the required standards.

Diagnostic work includes examination of cerebrospinal fluid, peritoneal dialysis fluid, urine, feces, sputum, blood/serum, pus, and diverse secretions. Investigations include serological assays for HIV and Hepatitis B, identification of micro-organisms, lice, fleas, and films for intestinal parasites.

Evidence of successful completion of the IBMS Specialist Portfolio may lead to an offer of a Specialist Biomedical Scientist, Band 6, position.

Responsibilities include:

1. Undertaking manual, semi-automated, and fully automated laboratory investigations.
2. Following standard operating procedures and participating in their review and update.
3. Performing routine maintenance on laboratory instruments and troubleshooting as needed.
4. Planning and organizing work within the team’s demands.
5. Technical validation of complex laboratory results to ensure accuracy and precision.
6. Communicating patient results to healthcare professionals by telephone.
7. Monitoring the accuracy and precision of investigations using quality control procedures.
8. Carrying out corrective actions when quality control indicates performance issues.
9. Reporting any events that may cause service failure.
10. Using interpretive skills to determine the clinical significance of results, including microscopic examination, pathogen testing, and molecular diagnostics.
