Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Cellular Pathology service is a rapidly expanding part of the Coventry and Warwickshire Pathology Network, based at Coventry (University Hospital), Nuneaton (George Eliot Hospital), and Warwick (South Warwickshire Hospital). It provides a comprehensive range of Pathology services to approximately 1 million residents and maintains a close relationship with Warwick University's Medical School. The network features digital slide scanning on both sites, with 100% of slides scanned at UHCW, including screening cases.


Our Histology department is undergoing major procurement, with new main lab and IHC equipment expected by the end of this year. This upgrade aims to improve turnaround times and offers an opportunity to redesign workflows and processes, inviting your involvement.

Coventry, in the West Midlands, is centrally located in England, offering excellent connectivity to Birmingham, Leicester, and London. Recognized as a top city to live and work, Coventry boasts a friendly atmosphere, affordable housing, and various employment prospects. It is home to highly-rated universities linked to the hospital, retail options, and a rich motor industry history.


For the post based in Warwick

Warwick, a charming town in Warwickshire, combines history, picturesque scenery, and modern amenities. Notable for Warwick Castle and its vibrant university community, Warwick is well-connected, just 11 miles south of Coventry and 20 miles from Birmingham. The town features Victorian and Georgian homes, scenic riverside properties, and access to the countryside, including the Cotswolds and Gloucestershire.

Main responsibilities:
  1. Perform manual, semi-automated, and fully-automated laboratory investigations according to SOPs.
  2. Interpret diagnostic investigations, ensuring result validity, accuracy, and precision.
  3. Report to the Section Manager any service delivery issues and participate in their resolution.
  4. Develop and investigate new techniques or analyzers as service needs evolve.
  5. Ensure timely reporting of results, taking remedial actions as needed.
  6. Meet laboratory performance targets set by senior staff.
  7. Use resources efficiently, managing reagent and consumable stock levels.
  8. Participate in reviewing and updating SOPs, health and safety documentation, COSHH, and risk assessments.
  9. Monitor and measure the accuracy and imprecision of investigations using quality control procedures.
  10. Act appropriately during technical/analytical non-conformities, informing the Section Manager and deciding on further investigations.
  11. Participate in external and internal quality assurance schemes and audits.
  12. Maintain accurate records in compliance with ISO15189 standards.
  13. Promote a culture of quality within the laboratory.
