Job summary

Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery Trust in Carlisle is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic chef to join Café Tullie. You will play a key role in the day-to-day running of our kitchen, preparing fresh, high-quality food for visitors and helping develop our food offer.

Working closely with the Head Chef, you’ll ensure food is prepared and presented consistently, maintain high hygiene standards, manage allergen awareness, and lead the kitchen on days off or during leave; 30 hours per week

Qualifications

• Experience and enthusiasm as a chef
• Strong food hygiene and allergen awareness
• Ability to lead a kitchen and deputise for Head Chef

Responsibilities

• Lead the day‑to‑day running of Café Tullie's kitchen and ensure consistent, high‑quality food preparation.
• Work closely with the Head Chef to develop menus and improve food offers.
• Maintain high standards of hygiene, portion control and waste management; deputise for the Head Chef in their absence.

Salary: £23,104 – £24,290 per annum

Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery in Carlisle (trading as “Tullie”) is a museum, art gallery and community hub. We’ve been part of Carlisle life since 1893. We’ve even been referred to as “Carlisle’s first learning centre”. Before the city had a university, Tullie gave Carlisle a museum, library, art school and technical school.

Tullie is being transformed via a series of major projects into a modern, dynamic new cultural experience aimed at showcasing more of the museum’s historic collections, providing more community engagement opportunities and attracting more visitors. Phase 2 of ‘Project Tullie’ opened to great critical acclaim in April 2025, and we are now delivering Phase 3.

Working closely with our Head Chef, you’ll ensure food is prepared and presented consistently and efficiently, contribute ideas for menus and improvements, and maintain high standards of food hygiene, allergen awareness, portion control and waste management. You’ll also take responsibility for leading the kitchen and deputising for the Head Chef on their days off or during periods of leave.

Working hours – 30 hours per week; 5 days over 7 days. The post holder will be expected to work flexibly within the opening hours of the operation which includes weekend and evening work.
