Job Description:
The Position
The Service Engineer will have a strong understanding of controls software and will be responsible for visiting customers' sites at short notice to fix problems with machinery & equipment.
Your skills are likely to have developed from supporting customers on site and having a keen interest in controls software on various PLC platforms, such as Siemens, Rockwell, Beckhoff, with an aptitude for changing codes and rectifying software problems.
Key Accountabilities
- You will be the face of the business, traveling to customer facilities to diagnose and resolve issues onsite.
- You will provide high-quality software design output, understanding customer and regulatory requirements.
- Design and develop PLC code from pre-written code (Rockwell, Siemens, Mitsubishi, Allen Bradley). Siemens experience is essential.
- Travel to customer sites for commissioning activities, post-installation support, or training.
- Maintain commercial awareness to manage software scope changes according to SOPs.
- Communicate updates effectively to the Service Team Lead, customers, and suppliers.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the department.
- Travel on short notice worldwide, including USA, Europe, and Asia.
- Work from home or travel to the Tadcaster facility when not onsite.
- Strive to add value, build trust, and provide exceptional service beyond competitors.
Key Responsibilities
- Test PLC and HMI/SCADA software, primarily using Siemens.
- Perform reactive maintenance and commissioning on UK and international customer sites.
- Provide technical support and aftermarket services.
- Interpret customer and regulatory requirements to ensure aligned software designs, reducing technical risks.
- Maximize value for customers and foster loyalty.
- Support continuous improvement to enhance service quality.
- Report project performance metrics to the Service Team Lead.
- Offer technical support collaboratively with the Service Team Lead.
Knowledge & Experience
- Experience in industrial automation software.
- Experience as a Service/Commissioning Engineer or in a customer-facing role.
- Ability to evaluate technical requirements and propose solutions.
- Interpret customer needs and deliver technical solutions.
- Commercial awareness regarding resource use, scope changes, and implications.
- Apply technical due diligence and risk awareness.
Skills and Qualifications
- Apprentice trained in Electrical or Mechatronic Engineering.
- HNC, HND, or BSc in a relevant engineering field preferred.
- Proficient in Rockwell and Siemens programming platforms.
- Experience integrating robotics into automation solutions is advantageous.
Additional skills that would be beneficial include experience with:
- Rockwell Automation products – RSLogix/Studio/FactoryTalk
- GE Fanuc iFix and Aveva InTouch & System Platform.
Relationship and Reporting Line
- Reports to Service Team Lead.
- Collaborates with: Aftermarket Department, Design team, Managers, Customers, Suppliers, & Institutions.
