Job summary

Thames Water seeks a Site SCADA Engineer (Waste) at Beckton to maintain and enhance SCADA, automation, and communications across the wastewater network. You will drive reliability, resilience and improvements with frontline teams in a large industrial control environment.

Base location is Hybrid – Beckton. 36 hours per week, on‑call rota. Strong SCADA/automation background and knowledge of AVEVA, Wonderware, FactoryTalk View, Iconics and Allen‑Bradley PLCs are desirable.

Qualifications

  • SCADA, PLC, ICA or industrial automation environments.
  • AVEVA System Platform/Wonderware, FactoryTalk View, Iconics or similar technologies.
  • Allen-Bradley PLC systems and OT networking.
  • Troubleshooting critical operational systems and collaborating with operations.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and enhance site-based SCADA systems across wastewater operations estate.
  • Troubleshoot faults involving SCADA systems, HMIs, PLCs and communications infrastructure.
  • Deliver upgrades and improvements to keep systems secure and reliable.
  • Support disaster recovery planning and business continuity arrangements.
  • Provide input into capital delivery and OT improvement projects.
  • Mentor colleagues across the OT community.

Job description

Thames Water seeks a Site SCADA Engineer (Waste) for its Beckton location, offering a competitive salary up to £62,000 per annum on a full-time basis. The role involves supporting critical operational technology across the wastewater network, ensuring control systems run reliably 24/7. You will maintain and enhance SCADA, automation, and communications infrastructure, collaborating with frontline teams to boost environmental performance and reduce pollution. Key responsibilities include troubleshooting system faults, implementing improvements, and driving resilience within a large industrial control environment. Candidates should possess strong technical expertise in SCADA platforms, excellent problem-solving abilities, and a proactive approach to system optimisation. This position directly contributes to services relied upon by millions of customers daily. Every day, more than 16 million customers rely on Thames Water's operational technology systems to safely collect, treat and transport wastewater. Behind those systems is a complex network of SCADA, automation, control and communications infrastructure that operates 24/7 across hundreds of operational sites. We're looking for a talented SCADA Engineer to join our Operational Technology team and help drive the reliability, resilience and evolution of one of the UK's largest industrial control system environments. You'll play a key role in supporting and improving the technology that enables our frontline teams to operate critical wastewater services while helping us reduce pollution, improve environmental outcomes and deliver better performance for our customers. This is far more than a traditional support role. You'll have the opportunity to influence technical standards, support major transformation programmes and work on technologies that sit at the heart of Thames Water's operational future.

What you'll be doing as a Site SCADA Engineer (Waste)
  • As a Waste Site SCADA Systems Engineer, you'll be responsible for maintaining and enhancing site-based SCADA systems across our wastewater operations estate. These systems provide critical monitoring, control and operational insight across treatment works and pumping stations.
  • Support and maintain critical SCADA platforms including AVEVA System Platform/Wonderware, FactoryTalk View and Iconics.
  • Ensure high levels of system availability, resilience and security across operational sites.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve faults involving SCADA systems, HMIs, PLCs and communications infrastructure.
  • Deliver upgrades, patches and improvements that keep systems secure and reliable.
  • Support disaster recovery planning and business continuity arrangements.
  • Work closely with operations teams to understand challenges and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Provide technical input into capital delivery and OT improvement projects.
  • Champion OT change management, risk management and cybersecurity best practice.
  • Act as a subject matter expert, sharing knowledge and mentoring colleagues across the wider OT community.

Base location: Hybrid – Crossness. Working pattern: 36 hours Monday to Friday, with participation in an on‑call rota.

What we're looking for
  • SCADA, PLC, ICA or industrial automation environments.
  • AVEVA System Platform/Wonderware, FactoryTalk View, Iconics or similar technologies.
  • Allen-Bradley PLC systems.
  • Industrial communications and OT networking.
  • Troubleshooting critical operational systems.
  • Working with operational stakeholders and translating technical issues into practical solutions.

You’ll stand out if you also have:

  • Experience within water, utilities, manufacturing, energy or other process industries.
  • Experience supporting industrial control system projects or major system upgrades.
  • Understanding of network design, redundancy and resilience technologies.
