Role Overview

As the Head of Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) for Moderna’s Harwell site, you will lead the EHS function during the launch and operation of our state-of-the-art mRNA drug substance manufacturing facility and R&D Center, including oversight of BSL2 and BSL3 laboratories.

You will develop and implement Moderna’s EHS strategy, ensure compliance, and foster a culture of safety and sustainability. This strategic leadership role offers visibility across the organization and a chance to shape Moderna’s global safety culture, with opportunities to engage in global EHS programs and utilize cutting-edge technologies like data-driven decision tools and Generative AI.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead all EHS activities at the Harwell site, acting as the primary EHS representative.
  • Develop and align the site’s EHS strategy with global priorities and local regulations.
  • Implement a risk-based EHS Management System suitable for complex operations, including manufacturing and high-containment labs.
  • Embed safety into daily operations and promote a culture of ownership and accountability.
  • Oversee environmental compliance and sustainability initiatives, aiming to exceed standards.
  • Manage emergency preparedness and crisis planning for business continuity.
  • Represent Moderna during interactions with regulatory authorities and inspections.
  • Contribute to global EHS initiatives across Moderna’s network.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant EHS regulations and permits.
  • Collaborate with biosafety teams to ensure robust biosafety programs for BSL2 and BSL3 labs.
  • Deliver engaging EHS training to enhance awareness and compliance.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation in line with regulatory and GMP standards.
  • Use KPIs and data analytics to monitor performance and drive improvements.
  • Support or lead strategic projects within Moderna’s Global EHS team.

  • Proactive, ownership-oriented mindset, establishing a strong EHS foundation for the site.
  • Ability to leverage data and digital tools, including automation and AI, to enhance safety performance.
Qualifications
Basic
  • Degree in Environmental, Health & Safety, Engineering, or relevant science.
  • At least 10 years of EHS experience in the life sciences sector, with 5+ years in leadership.
Preferred
  • Experience in manufacturing or laboratory EHS performance, aligning operational and EHS goals.
  • Deep knowledge of UK EHS regulations and compliance management.
  • Expertise in site-level EHS management systems.
  • Experience in biosafety management, supporting BSL-2 and BSL-3 operations.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Passion for operational excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
