Job summary

MTR Partnership in Cumbria is seeking an experienced Freelance Site Engineer to join a leading contractor on sizeable new build education schemes. The role offers long-term freelance work with an anticipated duration of 3–4 years and a start date in February 2027.

You will set out and survey works, interpret drawings, monitor quality, coordinate with subcontractors, and ensure activities comply with health and safety requirements while away from home.

Qualifications

• Experience as Site Engineer on construction projects.
• Strong setting-out and interpretation of drawings.
• Experience with surveying equipment (total stations, GPS).

Responsibilities

• Setting out and surveying works in accordance with drawings and specifications.
• Ensuring works are delivered accurately and in line with project requirements.
• Interpreting construction drawings and providing technical support to site teams.
• Monitoring quality and ensuring works comply with relevant standards.
• Coordinating with subcontractors, site management and other project stakeholders.
• Maintaining accurate site records and reporting progress.
• Ensuring all works are carried out in line with health and safety requirements.

The project is being delivered by a well-established main contractor specialising in large-scale construction projects across the education, commercial and public sectors.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Site Engineer looking for long-term freelance work, with an anticipated duration of 3–4 years.

• Experience working on new-build projects; education or public-sector experience would be advantageous.
• Ability to work away from home in Cumbria for the duration of the project.
• Relevant engineering qualifications or equivalent site experience.
