Job summary

Abatec Recruitment seeks an experienced Site Engineer to join the Hinkley Point C project in Somerset on a freelance basis. You will provide engineering support, ensure activities align with drawings, programme, and safety standards on a high-profile civil works site.

Initial 3-month contract with immediate start and no obligation to extend beyond Christmas; rotating day and night shift pattern with 7 days on/3 off followed by 7 nights/4 off.

Qualifications

• Proven setting-out and surveying skills on major civil projects.
• Ability to interpret and apply drawings and project specifications.
• Experience working with subcontractors and construction teams on live sites.
• CSCS certification and MSC/HS&E related accreditation are preferred.

Responsibilities

• Setting out and surveying works in line with drawings and project specs.
• Ensure construction activities follow approved drawings, specs and tolerances.
• Carry out site surveys, levels, measurements and as-built records.
• Check drawings and flag any technical issues early.
• Support site management and subcontractors with day-to-day engineering needs.
• Maintain inspection/test plans and quality records on site.
• Monitor workmanship and ensure adherence to quality standards.
• Coordinate with wider teams to maintain progress and resolve issues.

Summary

We are currently recruiting for an experienced Site Engineer to join one of the UK’s largest and most high-profile infrastructure projects at Hinkley Point C in Somerset.

This is an excellent opportunity to secure a freelance contract on a nationally significant civil engineering programme, supporting the delivery of major infrastructure works within a complex, fast-paced site environment.

The contract is initially for 3 months, with no obligation to continue beyond Christmas, offering an immediate opportunity for an experienced Site Engineer looking for a short-term assignment on a flagship UK infrastructure project.

The Role

Reporting to the site management team, you will be responsible for providing engineering support across your allocated work areas, ensuring construction activities are delivered in accordance with the design, programme, quality requirements and health and safety standards.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Setting out and surveying works in accordance with drawings and project specifications.
• Ensuring construction activities are delivered in line with approved drawings, specifications and tolerances.
• Undertaking site surveys, levels, measurements and as-built records.
• Checking drawings and identifying any technical issues or discrepancies before and during construction.
• Supporting site management and subcontractors with day-to-day engineering requirements.
• Ensuring inspection and test plans, quality records and relevant site documentation are maintained.
• Monitoring workmanship and ensuring compliance with project quality standards.
• Coordinating with the wider engineering and construction teams to maintain progress and resolve technical issues.
• Maintaining a strong focus on health, safety and environmental compliance throughout all site activities.

Working Pattern

The working rotation will follow a combination of day and night shifts:

• 7 days on / 3 days off
• Followed by 7-night shifts on / 4 nights off
• Rotating between day and night working as part of the agreed shift pattern.

Rates (PAYE Umbrella)

• £500 per day – Monday to Friday day shifts.
• £750 per shift – Saturday and Sunday day shifts.
• £750 per shift – Night shifts, Monday to Sunday.

Requirements

• Proven experience working as a Site Engineer on major civil engineering or infrastructure projects.
• Strong setting-out and surveying skills.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
• Experience working with subcontractors and construction teams on live sites.
• Relevant CSCS certification.
• MAPs HS+E Accreditation
• Good understanding of construction quality assurance, inspection procedures and health and safety requirements.
• Flexibility to work the specified rotating day and night shift pattern.
