Job summary

Gregory Distribution Ltd in Bridgwater is seeking a reliable Shunter Driver to safely move trailers and tanks around our site, supporting day-to-day operations. You will cover the Transport Operator role during holidays, sickness, or peak demand, with full training provided.

Shift is nights, any 5 out of 7, with a base rate of £15.00 per hour plus a £2.75 per hour uplift for weekend work and for hours between 21:00 and 04:00, plus £20 per shift for office cover.

Qualifications

• Valid UK Class 1 Driving Licence

Responsibilities

• Retrieve empty trailers from the trailer park and position them as required
• Transport loaded and empty tanks between the trailer park and production areas to support operational flow
• Relocate loaded trailers from loading bays to designated trailer park areas
• Carry out general yard duties to maintain a safe, efficient site
• Conduct daily vehicle safety inspections using company systems and mobile devices
• Maintain regular communication with the transport team regarding movements and updates
• Adhere to health & safety policies, site procedures, and transport compliance requirements
• Attend mandatory training and development sessions
• Support operational teams in achieving customer service and productivity targets
• Carry out occasional local deliveries and collections as required

About the Role

We are looking for a reliable and safety-focused Shunter Driver to support our transport operation in Bridgwater. The role involves the safe and efficient movement of trailers and tanks around site, helping to ensure smooth day-to-day operations. In addition to shunting duties, you will be expected to provide cover for the Transport Operator role during periods of holiday, sickness, or increased business demand. Full training will be provided, and any time spent covering this role will attract an enhancement of pay.

Shunter Driver Duties

• Retrieve empty trailers from the trailer park and position them as required.
• Transport loaded and empty tanks between the trailer park and production areas to support operational flow.
• Relocate loaded trailers from loading bays to designated trailer park areas.
• Carry out general yard duties as required to maintain a safe, efficient, and organised site.
• Conduct daily vehicle safety inspections using company systems and mobile devices, ensuring vehicles remain roadworthy and compliant.
• Maintain regular communication with the transport team regarding vehicle movements, operational updates, and any issues that may impact service.
• Adhere to all company health & safety policies, site procedures, and transport compliance requirements.
• Attend mandatory training and development sessions to maintain skills and industry knowledge.
• Support operational teams in achieving customer service and productivity targets.
• Carry out occasional local deliveries and collections as required.

Transport Operator Cover Duties

• Assisting with the coordination and planning of daily transport activities.
• Supporting the day-to-day running of transport operations, ensuring customer and service requirements are met.
• Liaising with drivers, customers, and internal stakeholders to resolve operational issues.
• Conducting driver briefings and debriefings.
• Monitoring fleet utilisation and supporting effective resource allocation.
• Responding professionally to queries via telephone, email, and face-to-face communication.
• Producing operational reports and assisting with KPI monitoring and performance analysis.
• Supporting transport operations during disruptions, breakdowns, or other service challenges.
• Maintaining transport records and ensuring compliance with company procedures and legal requirements.
• Working collaboratively with the wider transport team to ensure operational continuity.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

• Valid UK Class 1 (Category CE) Driving Licence.
• Current Driver CPC qualification.
• Digital Tachograph Driver Card.
• Strong understanding of transport safety and compliance requirements.
• Excellent communication and organisational skills.
• Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines.
• Confident, professional, and customer-focused approach.
• Good geographical knowledge.

Desirable

• Previous shunting experience within a transport or logistics environment.
• Experience within a transport planning or transport administration role.
• Knowledge of transport legislation and fleet compliance requirements.
• Experience working with transport management systems (TMS).

Competitive Salary : £15.00ph plus an extra £2.75ph for any weekend working and for any hours worked between 21:00pm and 04:00am. An additional £20.00 per shift will be received for any office cover.

Shift Hours : Start times will vary depending on business need- likely to be between 18:00pm- 21:00pm. Any 5 out of 3, flexibility is required.

Overtime : Available.
